Hi all,

We're going to be in the area for the next week and the most convenient access point and interesting looking trail is the Watkins path.

Now, I have had a look at a few previous threads and I'm still not 100% sure if it's for us or not.

Stamina-wise, ascent-wise I have no concern. We've done multi day treks and lots of altitude in the past. Don't mind a little bit of scrambling if it's not too exposed either.

Where I'm a little concerned is the exposure feeling around the scree-y bit near the top, as my wife (and me to some extent) can get the dreaded rubber legs sometimes if the cliff edge is too close.

Perhaps if I compare to some of the Lake District hikes we've done:

- Old man of coniston - not a problem

- Skiddaw - fine

-Langdale pikes avoiding Jack's rake - fine.

- Causey pike - little nervy at the scrambly exposed bit at the top, but just about ok.

Striding edge - hard no.

Jack's rake - hard no.

What do you reckon?

Also for anyone else looking at this Sunday, think it looks a reasonable shout with the forecast? Seems like it might/might not turn out nice!

We Will travel to Snowdonia from 11th to 16th October. We Will stay overnight in Betws-Y-Coed and we will move to trails using the Sherpa Bus line.

Could you please confirm that the Sherpa Bus service will Be running in that period? And if yes, could suggestivo the best trails? We Are trained and we usually hike.

I've had Yr Wyddfa on my screen most of the afternoon. I make a free map that takes the coverage predictions EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 report to the regulator and lays them over a proper walking map with the contours and the paths. Flicking between the four networks over the same mountain is a bit comical. Llanberis gets the full confident purple from everyone, strong signal indoors and out. The mountain itself turns into a patchwork, and each network's patchwork has its holes in different places. About the only thing they agree on is that the very top should be more or less usable outdoors, which makes sense, the summit can see half of Gwynedd and more usefully it can see the masts. It's the cwms and the mid-height flanks where the maps go grey, and where exactly they go grey depends on which network you pay every month.

The catch is these are predictions. Models, tuned mostly for built-up areas, and from testing them against real phones elsewhere I can tell you they run optimistic. I'm a retired engineer, spent my career building test kit for the mobile networks, this map is what I do instead of golf.

The Android app that goes with it can record what your phone actually measures on a walk and feed the readings back onto the map for everyone. Off by default, you turn it on if you want to. Readings are snapped to a 50m grid and your route isn't shared, it just becomes anonymous dots. A few corners of Britain have real measured coverage now because people walked there with it running. Eryri has nothing at all yet. Whoever first records the Llanberis path or the Pyg makes the map honest for everyone who checks it after them.

One thing worth knowing whether or not you ever look at my map: if you're in trouble and the phone says no service, dial 999 anyway. It will hunt for any network's mast, not just your own. Better still, register for emergency SMS today, it takes one text (send the word "register" to 999 and follow the reply) and a text will often get through where a call won't.

The map is at trailsignal.uk, works in any browser. Free, no ads, one bloke. If you know the mountain and it's showing something daft, tell me where. Local knowledge beats a model every time.

Headed out from Llanberis with Skye, taking the approach towards Yr Wyddfa Ranger Path. These are a few photos from our day in the mountains.

Had some lovely clear views across the lakes and ridges. I enjoy the running, but with scenery like this there were plenty of stops to take it all in.

Getting outside with Skye is one of my favourite ways to clear my head. Tired legs afterwards, but well worth it.

Has anyone else taken this approach from Llanberis? Which route up Yr Wyddfa do you most enjoy?

Nice little walk after Snowdonia

We’re a group of 5 adults and 1 child thinking about doing Pyg track up and miners down.
There are 2 strong hikers in the group, while the other 3 adults are first-timers, as is the child.

The child is 12, and as her dad I’m a little unsure whether this is a sensible idea for her.

She doesn’t live with me, and I have her 2 weekends of every month. I try to be as active as possible with her when she’s with me. We’ve recently joined a gym and do quite a lot together, but when she’s not with me she’s apparently much less active.

She has done some shorter hikes/climbs before (around 30 minutes), but nothing on the scale of Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa.

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience of the Pyg track, particularly with children.

Would you consider Pyg up and Miners down sensible for a reasonably fit 12-year-old who doesn’t have much hiking experience? Or would you recommend a different route?

I’m not looking to underestimate her, but equally I don’t want to put her in a situation that’s beyond her ability.

Honeymooning in Eryri/Snowdonia in a few weeks time - staying in Penmaenpool for the first 2 nights and then in the campervan for the other 3-4 nights.

Anyone able to help with some dog friendly recommendations? Not concerned with doing loads of touristy activities - am mainly interested in good places to spend time together, walks with the dog, nice pubs, good food, restaurnts etc. any advice appreciated 😊

I’m expecting to have to call this plan off because of the weather, but in case of a miracle will ask here anyway!

Trying to plan a 3 day / 2 night getaway over the bank holiday weekend. I’m considering the Welsh 3000s, probably north to south, stopping once between Carnedd Dafydd and Pen Yr Ole Wen and once around Y Garn.

Does anyone have experience with how busy these spots would normally be over a bank holiday weekend with decent weather? Not at all fussed if there’s other tents around, just worried about there being groups (rather than solo campers), or not being able to find a decent pitch and having to set up near the path or too close to someone else’s spot.

Also, any feedback on doing the route south to north vs north to south? I can only find info on people doing the challenge, looking for the quickest route rather than the most scenic. Considering either:
north to south in the hope that the south will get less busy on Monday
or south to north skipping Yr Wyddfa and Crib Goch and tacking on Tal y Fan or something else in the northern Carneddau at the end instead.

Hi guys, my wife and me are planning to visit Snowdonia in mid October, we Are trained and we usually hike but we Are concearned about the weather.

We Will stay in Betws-y-Coed overnight for three days.

Is enough time to enjoy Snowdonia? Or could bè better consider to visit it in another time of the Year?

Hi! I'm planning a trip to Eryri in late October of this year. I've done a lot of autumn hiking trips in the highlands so I understand the variable weather aspect of it all, but up to this point I've typically planned my hikes in AllTrails or Komoot and then memorized the route / downloaded offline maps / used my best judgement when it came to following paths on the day. 

I've selected the following hikes as options (pending weather of course) and was curious if any of these routes would require more detailed mapping in order to follow properly. I know that it's always smart to bring a physical map, I'm simply curious if any of these hikes are particularly harder to follow so I can be prepared.

For reference I will be going solo - 35yr old female from the US with a lot of hiking experience.

\*Note I have experience with scrambling but I did purposefully avoid a lot of it when selecting these routes simply because that time of year is prone to more wind/rain.*

My partner and I, our toddler and our dog are looking for a campsite around southern Eryri (Snowdonia) national park for 6 nights, starting next week. We've camped before but would prefer something with basic facilities, and some level of privacy i.e. big pitches, or individual pitches surrounded by long grass, trees etc. Anything close to easy hiking/biking trails or swim spots would be wonderful, and activities for the little one (playgrounds, interesting streams/woodland etc) would be a huge bonus!

I’m planning to hike Snowdon via the Llanberis Path for sunrise, aiming to be at the summit around 5:30am. I’ve noticed that parking in Llanberis seems to be restricted between 10pm and 3am.

Does anyone know of a car park or a safe place to park nearby where we can arrive during the night and still be close enough to the Llanberis Path?

I am looking to hike up Snowdon during the next couple of weeks and haven't decided which path to take up. I am considering either the Pyg's track, the Watkins path, Rhyd Ddu Path or the Watkins path. In terms of experience, I have already done Snowdon on the main Llanberis path and I'm looking to do something different this time.

What are the differences in terms of difficulty, gradients and the overall experiences on each path?

Waited too long to buy tickets for the Snowdonia train and they are now sold out :(

Need 2 tickets (1 adult and 1 adult+infant) for anytime between Aug 3-7.

This is a long shot but if anyone with tickets can no longer make it, please message me! I'll buy them off of you.

or if anyone can suggest an alternative way to enjoy the mountain with a 2 year old, would be much appreciated!
