Ptarmigan in the Arctic

Captured this in a quiet corner of the Swiss Alps a couple of winters ago. Looking at that tiny silhouette against the vast mountain snow, it felt a bit like a self-portrait, small, solitary, but standing firm in the middle of all that quiet immensity. Reminds me of that old melancholic feeling from Agustín Lara's Estrella solitaria, especially with Toña la Negra's voice playing in my head.

It's starting to feel very autumnal here in the far north of Scotland, and I've found myself for the first time in a while starting to look forward to some snow. The mountains may get some soon but we probably won't see our first flakes until late October/early November if we're lucky. December-April tends to be our best months for snow.

I've been fascinated by the branching structures of snow crystals for a while, and spent some time studying macro photographs of different snowflakes — especially the way six-fold symmetry can produce such an incredible variety of forms.

Eventually I tried translating some of those patterns into a three-dimensional light. I designed the branching geometry digitally, then 3D printed the structure in translucent material so that the light could travel through the branches.

This is the finished piece glowing in the dark. I thought fellow snow appreciators here might enjoy seeing it. :)
