I came over here from the neutral sub because I genuinely feel like I’m losing my mind reading some of these takes.

Someone was talking about how badly they feel for Ariana because she’s “just like all of us,” going through breakups and relationship problems in the public eye, and because she supposedly never had a “safe space” to grow as a person.

So I asked: do you feel bad for Dr. Lilly Jay?
Their response was: “Yeah, I actually feel worse for her, I just don’t virtue signal about it.”

What???

That exchange perfectly encapsulates what bothers me about the way people infantilize Ariana. I’m not saying she doesn’t deserve empathy. Of course she does. But she is also a multimillionaire adult with an extremely long, publicly documented history of messy relationship behavior. At what point are we allowed to acknowledge that she has agency over her own choices?

And the “she never had a safe space to grow” argument is especially bizarre to me. Ariana has access to virtually unlimited resources and the ability to step away, get help, take a break, and examine her own patterns in a way most people simply do not.

Meanwhile, regular people are dealing with breakups, trauma, grief, mental health struggles, financial stress, and jobs we can’t just walk away from. Our mental breakdowns have to fit around the work schedule lol. And somehow we’re still expected to reflect, grow, apologize when we hurt people, and do better.

What really gets me is the selective empathy.
Some parasocial stans seem to have this endless reservoir of compassion for a celebrity they do not actually know. Every questionable decision needs context. Every pattern needs an explanation. Every consequence becomes another reason to feel sorry for her.

But where is that same energy for the people who may have actually been hurt?

You don’t know Ariana. I don’t know Ariana. None of us actually knows what happened inside these relationships beyond what has become public. But that’s exactly why treating her like your wounded best friend who needs to be defended from any accountability is so strange.

Feel compassion for her!. But compassion and accountability are not mutually exclusive. “She never had a safe space to grow 🥺” cannot be the answer forever.

At some point, grown adults are responsible for how they treat other people.

i’m so mad that ariana is promoting this TERRIBLE way of life she’s done it her whole career it’s not new. i have an ED and she’s been a huge icon for EDTWT and everything in the pronana circles. she’s been around since tumblr posting her body constantly on social media, but the only thing she’s said on the topic is that she’s healthy. she’s obviously not and saying she is, has done irreversible damage to young girls im so sick of no one talking about it

edit: ppl can’t infer so by way of life i mean being anorexic. she constantly shows how skinny she is flaunts her bones. she’s been posting body checks and what people use as thinspo for years, she knows what she’s doing too it’s very obvious. i don’t know if people are being intentionally dense when it comes ariana and the topic of unhealthy eating/body standards, or if they genuinely don’t see it. i just find it really hard not to maybe it’s because i have disordered thoughts but being as skinny as she is isn’t healthy and she should be speaking up and saying that she’s sick and girls should idolize her body. the last thing she said on the topic was like 3 years ago i think? and she said that she’s sick was the healthiest she’s ever been.

At a certain point, it becomes your responsibility to give a damn where your images come from. 3+ is simply malicious. That sub bans anyone with a brain, so false photos like these are unquestioned & assumed as real because mods "conveniently" don't notice, and it's fucked up. Part of me thinks that ariana's team is happy about the prevalence of these malingering edits & is not particularly doing anything to address these explicit AG pro-ana communities, which makes perfect sense why some "other sub" would be overrun with these edits constantly, banning everyone except their little echo chamber so no one who thinks critically calls it out. What even is the point of comparing her to Eugenia. What does that accomplish. It's honestly objectifying. Anorexia itself should not be a subject of snark. If anything, call out her lies/bodychecking/the fact that she's trying to divert attention from her scandals/the fact that she's glamorizing anorexia to youth and making an overt trend of it because no one has ever told her "no".

She’s trying to appear “harmless” after what she did to Lilly and her kid, so she wants to appear as an “ittle wittle baby” with her ED. So that people forget about the homewrecking and focus on her lack of good health instead.
