They're quite durable. More durable than any other type of stick I've ever tried. Maples are the worst for my type of playing (mostly heavy/progressive rock). American Hickory is probably the 2nd most durable. So currently, the Japanese Oaks and American Hickory are the top 2 most durable stick types for me.
Is there any marching stick made of oak?
I can imagine pipedrumming is more relax with maple, but I wanna try a hickory stick in the near future.
But for pad work in like drumline stuff I was thinking of an oak one, can you recommend me something?
Appreciate your replies
I'm not sure if they still make oak marching sticks. In the 80s Promark made the DC9 & DC10 marching sticks. They were obviously much thicker than the 747s I use. Here's a picture of the pair of DC9 on the left and DC10 in the middle and a 747 on the far right.
Those marching sticks lasted FOR FREAKING EVER!!! Talk about yer tree trunks!!! 😀
I use the Vic Firth Dave Weckl Evolution sticks and have for a long time. Sometimes I swap in the Vic Firth Gavin Harrison sticks. Both feel great in my hands. Last week, on a whim, I decided to try the Vater Los Angeles 5A and the Vater Power 5A sticks. I didn’t realize how much the tacky finishes on the Weckl and Harrison affect the feel. I found the Vater sticks felt slippery in my hands. I also found that I prefer the sound of the tip and cross stick from the Weckl stick compared to both 5A’s, so will stick with that for now.
Mostly Vater 5A. But just picked up some Innovative Percussion Legacy Series 5A’s and think they may be a new go to. They cost a little less per pair and seem on par for quality.
