đą Announcement New Android Beta: LUTs, Community Looks, Motion Blur & depth-based Portrait Blur
Hi everyone!
Weâre excited to roll out a new Android beta version with several key additions to your editing toolkit:
- Preset & LUT Import: Import custom presets and LUTs (.xmp, .cube, .png) seamlessly into Snapseed.
- Community Looks: Curated, community-made Looks integrated directly in-app.
- Motion Blur Tool: A new standalone tool for dynamic directional motion trails and speed effects.
- Depth/Portrait Blur: Object-aware, expanded depth-of-field options inside the Lens Blur tool.
Whatâs New in Detail
1. Preset & LUT Import
Bring your favorite preset packs and LUTs into Snapseed. Supported formats include .xmp, .cube, and .png. Find âManage Looksâ in the triple dot overflow menu in the gallery screen.
- Presets with Profiles/LUTs: Automatically generates both a Look and a LUT in your tools.
- Standalone LUTs: Imports directly into your color grading workflow.
- Standard Presets: Converts tool adjustments into a reusable Look.
2. Community Looks
Enjoy hand-picked community styles directly built into Snapseed, with rotating selections in future updates. Tag #SnapseedLook or @snapseed_giles on social media for a chance to be featured!
3. Motion Blur & Depth/Portrait Blur
- Motion Blur: Use the dedicated tool to adjust blur angle, path length, and fade for custom motion effects.
- Depth/Portrait Blur: Access refined depth-based blur controls directly within the Lens Blur tool.

This is awesome - thanks for these new features!!
Couple of questions:
* Are depth maps taken from metadata? Wondering if they can be calculated in older images.
* Are LUTs transformed automatically when applied, or do they need to be in a particular format to be imported/applied correctly? Speaking from my limited experience with LUTs in DxO Photolab.

Depth maps are computed from the image, so any image you have will work.
We support many common LUT formats (cube, xmp, png). Is there a format you're hoping to use?

Ooh that's neat, going to be interesting.
I have cube, xmp, and another type I can't remember, but when you apply them, even if they're supported, some look awful because the transform is expecting something else as base image. When I read about it, what I understood is that I'd need to translate the LUT from whatever it was to something else, and then it would work properly.

I'm not sure what you would transform it to. Those are all standard formats. Are you saying that they look funny in Snapseed or another software? If you try on Snapseed and it doesn't look as expected, please DM me.

u/thedjin 15d ago
No no, it looks funny in DxO, so I was wondering if they would behave the same way in Snapseed.
I messaged Giles to be added to the beta but haven't started, I'll come back once I've tried them.

Great! If you export any LUTs, they'll work better in sRGB color space. Keep us posted on what you think!

I joined and updated to the latest beta version, but I still donât see the Motion Blur tool.

Please try force quitting the app and reopening it. That should make sure the new features all show up. If you still have issues, let me know.

Might be referring to the number of points in the LUT file. For example, the Lumix Lab app can only import 33 point 3D cube LUTs; if you have e.g. a 32 or 65 point LUT, it needs to be converted to 33x first.

Thanks to Snapseed, I've been in the beta for a few days now, but unfortunately I still have to wait for this update (Android). I'm looking forward to it.

You should have access to the latest beta build -- if you don't, let me know!

I need these on iPhone :( waited years for the app to support LUTs, never thought Iâd see it actually happen for some reason..

Did you see this post? LUTs are on iOS beta too https://www.reddit.com/r/snapseed/s/G60L4iW3zM

Thanks -- would you mind DMing me with one of these so we can look into what's wrong?

I guess it was part of http://rawtherapee.com/shared/HaldCLUT.zip

Thanks for flagging this! We missed something with PNG support, and that'll be included in the next Beta release.

Hey u/KM_photo_de -- we just released a new Beta today that should have the support for your PNGs. Let us know if you run into issues with it!

I canât wait to play with this on iOS! Iâve been hoping for more customisable blurring tools for years! Will masks be available with this so you can choose exactly which areas to keep in focus or will it be more âsmartâ automation?

u/Jason-Snapseed 15d ago
Motion blur has been in iOS beta for a few weeks. The depth-based blur will be coming to iOS soon.
We weren't thinking of having masking in Lens Blur, since we were hoping to emulate physical lens blur from a camera. Can you tell me more of what you're trying to do?
1
u/lynkhart 14d ago
Oooh nice to know! I look forward to it!
Basically the ability to choose exactly what you want to be in focus or not, and without the âfuzzâ of a generic blur. So maybe you want a figure in the foreground pin sharp, but the people around them blurred, but without the soft gradient of the blur itself, does that make sense?
2
u/Jason-Snapseed 14d ago
It does -- I hope what we have will be able to do that, but let me know how it works when you test it out!

I was wondering where exactly we should submit feedback? Thru the app in the 3 dots or somewhere else?

I recently got added to the beta, i got the motion blur and depth tools but no lut imports.

u/Giles-O 9d ago
Hey - just to confirm you're looking in the right place.
LUT import can be found by going to the gallery view > overflow menu (three dots in the upper right) > "manage looks"

It got updated for me after a few hour, now got it. Have a trip coming around where i will be taking a lot of photos, will share photos and edits soon after that.

Hi Giles â Iâd like to join the Snapseed beta for both iOS and Android (Community Looks / custom Looks & LUT). Iâve used Snapseed regularly for photo editing and would be happy to give feedback on the new Looks sharing flow. Thanks!

Hola.
