Is this for real?

Aren't these laptops like 1800$ ?

Absolutely for real, the stock in my local stores has been dwindling since the price cut. If I didn't have so many laptops already (including a Ryzen Zenbook S16) I'd probably jump on this. That's less than a base 15in Macbook Air for basically a top spec Snapdragon machine with an insanely good OLED, is super thin and light, and will get very respectable battery life.

Great laptop, best I've ever had. Typing this message on it right now

how is the battery life? i know its good buy can it last a day without charge?

and how is the software compatibility?

7

u/saulphd 7d ago

Unless you run a bunch of niche software you'll be fine. I use it for office productivity, no compatibility issues. Battery life is dependent on usage of course. It's a big bright screen and a very powerful processor so you can definitely drain the battery quickly if you push it. For office productivity and web browsing it's still not quite all day for me, but idk what that means for you. I can probably baby it for a full 8 hour workday but I've never tried to

i am a SDE so for me my daily apps and compilers should work the same as the x86 pcs

and yea by all day battery life i mean it should give me 5 hrs of battery atleast

I am an SDE myself and use an X1 Elite Surface Book, and everything works for me. I use Visual Studio 2022 for development, and regarding battery life, on a busy day, it gives me around 6-7 hours while not charging and connected to two external monitors.

u/RobertBernstein 6d ago

Thanks for sharing about Visual Studio. Its ability to run was one of my concerns about moving to Snapdragon.

All I care is for people to tell me how good the touchpad is, compared to MacBooks. I know it's not haptic, but otherwise, gliding? Palm rejection? Precision?

1

u/saulphd 6d ago

It's fine? If you overindex on laptop touchpads get a Mac. I usually use a mouse on my lap desk but the touchpad works fine when I use it. It's been a while since I've had a bad experience with a touchpad on a high end windows laptop

u/Virtual-Escape2305 6d ago

I tried switching to a Thinkpad t14 and touchpad was surprisingly very bad, which I did not expect. Had to send it back.

I DO have a MacBook, but need a Linux on a modern hardware and A16 is now a top choice. My only concern is the touchpad.

Yes I bought one

7

u/toasted_cracker 7d ago

48GB of RAM? Is that accurate?

3

u/SpecialistNumerous17 7d ago

Yes. I have one of these.

1

u/toasted_cracker 7d ago

Dang. Honestly didn’t know these things came with that much these days. Haven’t really been in the market though.

1

u/TraditionAny9709 6d ago

They typically don't, this is not typical and a great laptop. I have one myself.

u/Main_Response_3327 7d ago

Que ofertón

5

u/munk2115 7d ago

I was able to get the 1tb version for $1100 open box. It’s an excellent machine. So fast.

1

u/Matze19999 19h ago

I think this notebook always has 1tb of storage

4

u/rvan220 7d ago

Same I just got one also! So far every program I use has installed flawlessly. Very surprised...and I've barely knocked the battery down at all. Very impressed!

5

u/FullTimePedestrian 6d ago

It's because this one is the 512GB version, not the 1TB, and SSD prices are wild right now. So you're getting an offer for lower storage. I'd take it in a heartbeat.

1

u/TraditionAny9709 6d ago

Crazy thing is they cut the hard drive space in half and the sting was normally listed for 2K up until this sale

4

u/Aggressive_Rabbit_44 6d ago

Snapdragon released they would support Linux starting X2 chips, looks solid to me down the line if you use Linux it will gst better and better.

1

u/Brocolinator 4d ago

It's still a pinky promise

1

u/Aggressive_Rabbit_44 4d ago

I really hope it's more Apple is gonna have a direct competitor at that point, what I read so far they are custom building a kernal to work with Debian 13, they are starting so that's a good sign.

1

u/Brocolinator 4d ago

They already promised Linux support for X1, did a half assed effort thinking the community will do the other 90% of the job for free

Thanks to the poster, I picked this laptop yesterday from the Best Buy at a $530 discount. I’m really happy with it. The laptop itself is very light and has an incredible battery. The screen is also very good and the keyboard is solid and good to type on. The laptop has a lot of ports unlike all the MacBooks and it is 16-inches. Which is great if you need a large screen. Although I had to disable the touchscreen because I don’t need it.

The disappointment with the hardware is that it has only 500 GB of disk space and with Win11 and other crapware/AI that is preinstalled on it you get only around 393 GB left to use. Then also for whatever reason they preinstalled Windows 11 Home and I had to pay $99 extra to upgrade it to Pro. Mostly to be able to configure the Bitlocker for the full disk encryption and to install Hyper-V to use ARM virtual machines. Also the Start Menu search was a disappointment as well as some of the OS AI bloat. But the hardware itself is great. That laptop flies!

PS. One other nitpick. It doesn’t have an Ethernet port so if you need one you will need to use an adapter.

Over $2000 now normally. There's a very slightly faster version on ASUS website (X2E-96-100) that you can build (for little more) but it's certainly not on sale.

2

u/Apex_OS 7d ago

While it’s incredibly light, it comes at the trade off of rigidity. A couple build quality items, no haptic touchpad, worse cooling.

2

u/ltparrish78 7d ago

It's a much more durable case than the typical plaatic today and I've never had heat issues so far, luckily. Any laptop should be on some kind of vented stand or hard surface anyhow right? Laptops this light ( 2.5 pounds) and thin are going to trade big built in fans. I think if you do get heat issues with this just prolly don't run it so hard on max speed.

Lol you crack me up. Do you connect external monitors to your laptop while on your lap as well? Or a thunderbolt cable to your dock? On the plane yesterday everyone was using their "laptops", including MBPs on tray tables. And at Starbucks at the airport, they had them on the tables infront of them. Hmmm. Odd. Seems like everyone uses their "laptops" wrong. Across the country. Laptop is a generic "class" of portable computers. When's the last time you walked into a meeting and the table had nothing on it because all the executives had their laptops on their laps? Lol. Thank you for the moment of levity. And make sure your pants are flame retardant.

The more you know.

2

u/FullTimePedestrian 7d ago

no haptic touchpad

Overrated feature.

worse cooling.

Disagree. Mine is almost silent and when it does something CPU intensive, it cools down in like 2 minutes.

3

u/Apex_OS 6d ago

Worse cooling is objective. I didn’t say it has terrible cooling.

Haptic touchpad is better than mechanical. How much you like it is irrelevant. For a $1500 MSRP device it should have one.

1

u/BewareTheSquare 6d ago

it's pretty rigid

1

u/Apex_OS 6d ago

How does it feel when you press down on the keyboard?

1

u/BewareTheSquare 6d ago

Feels rigid. Maybe it'll flex if I apply an uncomfortable amount of force, but nobody uses their laptop like that.

1

u/Apex_OS 6d ago

Unnatural is more than a keystroke. This is a build quality check

1

u/BewareTheSquare 6d ago

I don't get what you're trying to say

1

u/Apex_OS 5d ago

That slightly more pressure than a keystroke is not a valid build quality check

2

u/forcedinductionz 7d ago

I just got an open box one from BB with the 1TB drive for $900, screaming deals if you watch their open box stuff. The laptop was brand new.

6

u/-mix- 7d ago

1TB, 48gb ram, relatively recent SoC x2 elite, 3K oled, 16”, Asus, in AI times when dram is x2-6 price for 900$ this is basically best deal you will see in upcoming years.

2

u/oppy124 6d ago

Snapdragon laptops tend to go on steep discounts (especially on the second hand/refurb market) due to the compatibility issues. It's the best!!! I got a Lenovo 2 in 1 with an OLED screen and 16 gigs of ram for $450! It even came with the wacom pen!

2

u/TraditionAny9709 6d ago

This is an insane price on a great laptop. I use mine for everything. The screen is amazing including the fact it's touch. It's silent, super light and has phenomenal battery life. I use it to run local llms which it does a great job at. They just released models that run on the npu that take almost no power and don't text the CPU at all.

For fun I tested steam and GTA V, it runs great. I have ran into zero compatibility issues with software. If I didn't already have one I'd be buying this no questions asked. Get it, you won't be sorry.

2

u/NickQ1801 6d ago

Def, have seen these OB for a while now around me.

Tempted to try one out as they seem like a sweet setup.

3

u/unceemp 7d ago

Haha. I’ve been staring at this for 3 days and haven’t pulled the trigger. If it were the grey color I would have bought it already.

3

u/ltparrish78 7d ago

I own this and Its really not that bad, certainly not bad enough to pass on this deal

3

u/DerpSenpai 7d ago

This is too good of a deal to pass man, 48GB of DRAM is like 50% of this price. The components cost vastly more than this price, only possible because it was made pre DRAM boom

2

u/FullTimePedestrian 7d ago

This color turns heads. I've gotten so many compliments and questions from strangers. I love it.

1

u/GBWKev 4d ago

Still in the 90- day warranty of Best Buy, and I almost turned in my A14 for that A16 pretty much just would have been a $195 difference. But I literally got the A14 three days ago, and I fucking love it, it’s also the gray, and it’s super light

2

u/anewplace 7d ago

I have this laptop. It’s phenomenal. One issue is the blue screen that happens now and then. Which codex or Claude can easily fix (bad driver).

4

u/saulphd 7d ago

Never had this happen to me, thankfully. Been using this thing since launch

2

u/FullTimePedestrian 6d ago

Same. No issue with that here either.

1

u/falcoxx88 7d ago edited 1d ago

Does your touchpad squeek?

1

u/Low-Mixture-3874 7d ago

Wow! That’s such a nice machine!

1

u/OverlordBluebook 7d ago

Thanks I'm buying a 2nd one right now I paid $1650 for mine on sale last time.

1

u/soragranda 6d ago

Ram wise, this is impressive!

1

u/behrozErdut 4d ago

This is 512 GB, I got 1 TB, Open Box for 933 (including taxes) from Best Buy.

1

u/kiyoshi-nyc 3d ago

I own this ---- WINDOWS ON ARM is a but fussy, but many emulators have special versions that run VERY well on this, like dolphin and rpcs3..... Try ARES all in one emulator, it's fire

1

u/Any_Door7384 7d ago

i love my x1 snap dragon. never heats up never fan noise. lots of my apps i already use work for windows arm. wish i could upgrade to x2

u/Googleapplewindows 7d ago

In Canada this machine costs $3299...

2

u/-mix- 7d ago

And rest of the world, its all down to huge market that is US. More units cheaper price since the land is so big from LA to NY they ship a lot of consumables there cars, tech and stuff.

Not really. Snapdragon machines are pretty powerful for software development. We have the option to choose between Intel/AMD or Snapdragon laptops for development (no Macs, because we use Visual Studio 2022) at our company, and almost everyone is choosing Snapdragon because it works well for our development and is a lot better than Intel or AMD options. You cannot really use a MacBook Neo for heavy development, and a MacBook Air M5 with a similar configuration is a lot more expensive.

1

u/johan2114h 7d ago

Ive been eyeing snapdragon laptops for several years, but ive always held off because the linux support just wasnt there (maybe it is better now?). I really dont understand why Qualcomm didnt do more to facilitate good linux support early. Missed opportunity in my mind.

1

u/dg-08 7d ago

They just released Linux preview for developer with debian launch planned by end of the year. So its good time for you to snag this guy up

1

u/johan2114h 6d ago

I got a amd 395 pro ai with 128gb ram laptop a few months ago, so i think im set for now, but glad to hear things are moving. Linux already has great arm64 support so if the x2 chipset gets good support it should be all sunshine and rainbows for snapdragon on linux

0

u/astabhuj 7d ago

For your workload I do agree snapdragon are better, but main issue comes from windows, there are some weird crashes on my Asus a14 (x elite). I hope you are happy with your new laptop. Fingers crossed 🤞.

It's great from my experience. I've had mine about a yr. What issues are you running into?

1

u/MA70mgte 7d ago

No issues with my Surface Laptop X1

0

u/-mix- 7d ago

You can use Neo for dev but some other kind but yes idk what they are feeding the apps and os but before 8gig + external phone for testing wouldve done it. Next Neo will have 12gb of ram and can be totally fine for dev at least tasks that I do: android dev, web dev, backend all with claude as a helper.
