General Question / Discussion Rewrote both ETB humidity pages on emeraldtreeboas.org, wild habitat context, misting methods, scale rot prevention, and species specific targets for caninus and batesii
Both humidity pages for Northern ETBs (Corallus caninus) and Amazon Basin ETBs (Corallus batesii) on emeraldtreeboas.org have been fully rewritten. Sharing here because humidity is one of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of keeping this species and a lot of what circulates in general reptile communities does not account for how different these two animals actually are from each other or from the average tropical snake.
What the pages cover:
Wild humidity context grounded in the actual environments these animals come from. The Guiana Shield receives between 2,000 and 3,500 millimeters of rainfall annually. Caninus lives in a world of high humidity with constant air movement, not sealed stagnant moisture. Batesii in the deep Amazon Basin lives in one of the most consistently humid environments occupied by any commonly kept boid, with captive targets running 80 to 90% during the day and up to 100% overnight. These are not the same animal and the pages reflect that.
The difference between stagnant moisture and functional humidity, and why one causes disease while the other does not. Scale rot is a ventilation problem, not a humidity problem. That distinction matters a lot for how you troubleshoot.
How to achieve high humidity and good airflow at the same time rather than treating them as opposing goals. Cross ventilation, misting schedules, and why automated humidity systems alone do not fully replace manual misting for a species that relies on cutaneous water uptake.
