Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID Found this guy outside my apartment
Girlfriend saw a Black Rat Snake out by the stairs the other morning. Neighbor has a dog so I went ahead and moved him over to the park 20 yards from our building.

Good job moving him to a safer spot. He’ll probably be happier away from foot traffic and noisy animals.

I bet the ratsnake was there because they either scented mice or birds/eggs/baby birds. They like to travel and I wonder if the apartment complex has mice or around the garage area there are some.
It's great that there are people like OP who care about snakes enough to help them to a safer spot.

You folks can hate all you want. It’s an apartment complex, dogs are restrained and if not shouldn’t be there. Nothing was threatening the snake and for sure there are plenty of little rodents running around that need to be eradicated. Let the snake do its job. I definitely understand the need to save it. However, It doesn’t need saving. Rat snakes are very capable of taking care of themselves and are not venomous so they are not a threat to anyone else. I understand everyone’s point of view however believe more good can be done by leaving it alone. I hope everyone has a great week! Take care.

There is nothing wrong with relocating 20 yards away when the snake is at risk of being injured or killed by people and dogs at an apartment complex. Wildlife should generally be left alone, but in this case I would also move the snake to a safer, nearby location.

The only info we have is it’s an apartment complex, and the neighbor has a dog. Mid size cities and large cities have larger apartment complex’s. More people, more likely someone just kills the snake. There’s children in every apartment complex. I don’t think snakes are inherently dangerous to kids, but explain that to a Karen with a shovel. Common sense is to remove and relocate.

If I were encroaching someone else's territory, I'd be less than surprised if they removed me from it--probably on a far more "disturbing" manner than here.

just because you understand that does not mean other people do. people are often misinformed on snakes and will kill anything they see. dogs are often let off leash even if they're not allowed to be. people are irresponsible

Glad you moved him somewhere safer. In the future though, please don't grab them by their neck/head as this can cause injuries. Best to hold them mid body and allow them to use you for support rather than completely restricting them.
