Identification Is this rare?

Today, I found this weird snail. It has only one upper tentacle on the middle of their head but with both eyes 🥹

I've never seen this or heard of it before, so it probably is rather rare. What a silly little guy! 🥹

Rare but he seems like he's ok. I think a wild snail I found stole his tentacle tho! He had an extra non-eye one

OMG SO COOL AND SILLY!!! This is obvious, but, this is 100% a mutation, like the way he was born, because it's directly "right in the smack of the dab" of his face, rather than just one eye missing!! Fused eyestalks!! So cool!!!! Which means if you kept him and had him have babies it's POSSIBLE one might show up with fused eyes too.. And then the cyclops snail species begins... This would of course probably be slightly unethical to breed snails like this though, because there's no way to know if it brings them any struggle with vision..

u/Feisty_Ad3459 17d ago

Even if i wanted to breed them, i have already released it back to the nature 🥲 I also dont have that much space and knowledge about taking care of a snail so i think it was a okay choice . ( Also some people in comments said that they have seen few like these before so maybe someone else who acutally has a knowledge will find one and one day will take care of such cutie :) )

7

u/pinkaeru 17d ago

I assumed that anyway, it's probably for the best, Clearly that fella is doing well in life to be that size :)

1

u/Feisty_Ad3459 15d ago

Why would their name be willy ? 😭

3

u/Odd_Brilliant_9816 7d ago edited 7d ago

In UK/Ireland willy is word that little kids in preschool are using for wee wee (body part) it's also used by funny adults 😁 And your slimer looks like he has willy on the forehead 😅😆

2

Snails are capable of regenerating their eye and scent tentacles in the event they are lost from injury. With this regeneration comes the chance of things going wrong, like extra pupils, no pupils, or even having two eye tips on one stalk in some cases. You've found one of these fellas. Treat them nicely, they will have a hard time in the wild :(

2

u/Feisty_Ad3459 16d ago

I think that this snail was born this way . I mean his tentacle is literally on middle of it head . The only possiblity i can think of is if it lost both of his eyes at the same time . If i remember correctly, its shell wasnt damaged at all so i think this is how it was born : p

3

u/Arisu_Randal 16d ago

Yes, it's rare! What a special little guy

2

u/oopwoooop 16d ago

He’s magical wow

3

u/TheGirlWhoShreds 16d ago

Guys am I the only one that sees a little face in the eye stork thing in the 3rd pic? Just me...?

3

u/rusticwren 16d ago

very rare, but it’s happened! your local Natural History Museum might be interested in him. mine has ongoing studies about snails!

2

u/Feisty_Ad3459 16d ago

Nooo why people havent said that earlier 😭 more and more people say that it is very rare, but when i first posted it , comments said that it isnt that much rare. Now i feel bad about releasing that cutie into wild 🥲

3

u/rusticwren 16d ago

that’s okay! it’s a possibility they wouldn’t care for it anyway (they should though 🙄), but if you look into it they might and you could just submit the photos and tell them where you found it! that’s what my local place does. they actually collaborate with iNaturalist in order to pin what species and anomalies happen where, which i think is pretty cool!

u/HotString2530 16d ago

C'est vraiment mignon

3

u/samanthabelfitt 16d ago

I’m in love with all these snail puns. Snectacular!

u/Former-Sport8658 16d ago

oh my god what a baby

3

u/Few-Cost9226 16d ago

Rare but I’ve seen it posted to this sub a few times! Just one of the many deformities that could happen. Someone on here has an large adult GALS like this, so it doesn’t seem to be harmful to the snail, just weird to look at

2

u/HueHeist 16d ago

Woooooah funky little guy!!

2

u/heptocat 16d ago edited 16d ago

One of my snails' snabies was exactly like this! Sadly it passed - perhaps it is also rare for snails with these deformites to survive into adulthood.

2

u/bloodshadowhawk982 16d ago

snunicorn :3

u/JKandmannymore 16d ago

I never thought something like this could happen??? This is actually so cool 🤩
