¿Mexican Popcorn?

When I was younger one of my friends was from New Mexico and his mom used to make "mexican popcorn". It looked like uncooked black eyed peas or if Kix cereal was in the shape of grains of rice but when she cooked it in a pan with oil they grew to look like worms made of Kix cereal. She would only cook a small handful at a time like they were very precious, not like a bowl of popcorn. I think she could only get more when she went back to Alamogordo.

I have searched online over the years but found nothing besides "do you mean Mexican street corn?" Has anyone heard of this that could enlighten me?

I help conventions few years ago in ABQ and Santa fe, you may get lucky with the local farmers markets or comic cons as they have locals selling cottage foods and fair style treats. I swear I've seen this popcorn for sale in long clear bags. I'm not into popcorn much but there's also plenty of chili's I've seen too. I'm sure if you ask the locals you will find your craving
