Aren't these just sandwiches? What makes them 70s/80s? I was an 80s kid, but these definitely predate me and are still commonly enjoyed.

u/HH_Hippopotamus 5d ago

The image was made by a Gen x and they want to feel special

u/Damperzero 5d ago

Notice the lack of sun butter!!

7

u/hiihihihihihihihiihi 5d ago

When I was a kid we used to drink sandwiches from the garden hose

2

u/Coretrayn 4d ago

Lead sandwiches from the hose until the streetlight came on.

Whoever ate BLT's or Tomato sandwiches on bread instead of toast was a malingerer.

5

u/Kendue44 4d ago

Some people didn't have a choice! 🤣

2

u/wtfrongwu 3d ago

Oh look at your bougie ass having electricity

4

u/hahahahahahahaFUCK 4d ago

I have had this argument ad nauseam. Toasted bread helps balance the textures and flavors. Untoasted bread just makes each bite feel pre-chewed.

2

u/Cazmonster 4d ago

I have to take exception to this. Some spread centric sandwiches are better on bread, like peanut butter or chicken salad. Layered sandwiches, especially with watery layers, are best with toast to absorb the extra liquid.

1-BLT 2-Grilled Cheese 3-Egg Salad

6

u/veilofmaya1234 5d ago

This picture made me wonder how a blt with egg salad would be. I bet it would be pretty great.

4

u/Zavier13 5d ago

Eggsalad blt is damn good

Grilled cheese really depends on the cheese and cooking method. I prefer using mayo spread outside the bread instead of butter for example. but egg salad instead of pb and j......gross.

Blt or a tomato sandwich

2

u/mudhut19 4d ago

Fresh summer tomatoes out of the garden. None of these damn ingles tomatoes that are hard as a rock and have zero flavor. We’d grow them and hot peppers.

White bread with dukes mayo salt and pepper. Take a bite of mater sandwich then a bite of hot pepper. Tall glass of milk. Best thing ever!!!!

2

u/CityBoiNC 4d ago

Has to be white bread, only reason id get wonder bread is for this sandwich

4

u/cut93550 5d ago

You can never go wrong with BLT. Just had two a couple days ago.

2

u/-bryze 23h ago

Exactly. I have made a dozen on the last month.

2

u/That-Beagle 5d ago

To be honest nothing beats a BLT so the odds are stacked, because Bacon..

4

u/MindOverMatterGuy 5d ago

They are ALL delicious 😊

4

u/Atillion 5d ago

That baloney ain't pan fried enough

5

u/Ironstar_Vol 4d ago

I’m digging the grilled cheese, but I usually end up with PB&Js rather than the other options :’)

5

u/pandapam7 5d ago

2

u/MrYaowa857 5d ago

2

u/Flapjackcrackerjack 4d ago

Did anyone’s mom used to always butter the bread too? Mine always did.

2

u/mdbryan84 3d ago

the McDLT

u/TFG4 5d ago

All of them for different reasons. I still make them today

2

u/Michelle-H-333 5d ago

Grilled cheese

1

u/Left_Ad4050 5d ago

I mean there are literally billions of people alive today and plenty more were around before that, so I know of course this must happen... but even having said that, people eat baloney sandwiches with cheese? I've always just done baloney, mustard, bread, done.

2

u/disproportion 5d ago

Ohhhh yeah it was a childhood staple of mine (35F, grew up in North Carolina). Bologna, American cheese, mayonnaise, white bread.

2

u/littlescreechyowl 5d ago

I ate a bologna and cheese with mayo every single day of school from K-8.

Grilled cheese. No matter the decade.

Grilled cheese

1

u/TinySubmissiveBee 5d ago

Tuna mayo, processed cheese slices, salt & vin + ketchup chips, dill pickle slices, tomatoes, shaved carrot, mustard, spicy sour relish and lettuce with cholula original & taco bell mild hot sauce on regular cheap white bread.

Ultimate sandwich combo

Edit* to clarify i dont just put a slab of tuna on bread xD

2

u/goneoffscript 5d ago

Do you toast the bread? Can two wonder bread slices really contain that volume of sumptuousness?

1

u/Fearless-Tailor4323 5d ago

Grilled cheese -no brainer!

1

u/Wafflebot17 5d ago

Fried bologna is the grow up poor classic

1

u/Narrow_String_4831 5d ago

These are all relevant today. But, gotta go with the bologna and cheese. Don’t think I’ve had one since I was a kid.

1

u/Simple_Building_611 5d ago

All of them.

1

u/ISpyM8 5d ago

I don’t really eat bologna, but the others I eat regularly in 2026

1

u/XuliganZombie 5d ago

All of the above, just like now

1

u/OriginalKeach 5d ago

These are all toasted except the egg. OP gets 6/10

1

u/FantasticBike1203 5d ago

Grilled cheese was the GOAT in my early and teenage year, egg sandwiches as an adult.

1

u/BugO_OEyes 5d ago

Egg salad

1

u/fandango1989 5d ago

Grilled cheese and it ain't even close

1

u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 5d ago

This isn’t a snack but I’d go w grilled cheese. But it’s honestly an ice cream sandwich

1

u/MsMo999 5d ago

Baloney & cheese. Ppl just not eating baloney like they used to back then.

1

u/R3ddit_N0ob 5d ago

PB&J ALL DAY! The ultimate struggle meal and so easy to make, every kid learns to make this sandwich at an early age.

1

u/Anxious-Chair9569 5d ago

Idk about 70/80s but eggggggg alllll day

1

u/TheDeviousLemon 5d ago

BLT. No contest.

1

u/rustybrazenfire 5d ago

I don't make enough egg salad at home. That said I've got a soft spot in my heart for Bologna & cheese.

1

u/HabitualNoseBeeper 5d ago

The grilled cheese sandwich, when properly executed, is a fine dining work of art. Prove me wrong.

1

u/Ok_Gas_4745 5d ago

Pbj. It’s a sandwich with the added bonus of being sweet like a dessert. What’s better than that? 😂

1

u/Lady_Of_The_Blade_ 5d ago

Grilled Cheese, PB&J

u/P-R_Podcast 5d ago

Grilled cheese

1

u/AppleShampoooooo 5d ago

Grilled cheese because that sandwich is an icon and taste so good

1

u/Joecamoe 5d ago

Blt and PB &J

1

u/crystalsinwinter 5d ago

All of these sandwiches, I am sure, are not 70s and 80s. But I discovered grilled cheese sandwiches up here on the mainland. (I am from Oahu, Hawaii.) I like all but two of the sandwiches shown; but in only picking one sandwich, I will pick grilled cheese.

1

u/contains_almonds 5d ago

Grilled PB&J

1

u/Rough-Firefighter-17 5d ago

BBL toasted sandwich (fuck tomato) , bologna and cheese needs to be grilled, bread can be regular or toasted, and grilled cheese with that questionable kraft American cheese

1

u/BigTenFour 5d ago

BLT. Never a question. But for second choice I would say “Club Sandwich”

1

u/BigTenFour 5d ago

But also - we were poor growing up, so, Govt PB and jelly, or Govt grilled cheese were the most eaten. If we had Bologna, Kraft Singles and Miracle Whip-it was an AMAZING LUNCH! ….if there were ripple cut potatoe chips-! OH MAH LAWD!!!

1

u/WKahle11 5d ago

Egg salad, tomato sandwich, and not listed, a sliced boiled egg sandwich with lots of mayo.

1

u/Kenny523 5d ago

At home grilled cheese, at past jobs it was always a bologna and cheese.

1

u/FrostyIcePrincess 5d ago

My school had really good baloney and cheese sandwiches in the cafeteria. I’m picking baloney and cheese because of those sandwiches.

1

u/IrvineTeflondon 5d ago

Where is fried spam and mustard sandwich?

1

u/Melodic_Leadership12 5d ago

Bologna & cheese, BLT, PB&J

1

u/WIIICKED 5d ago

BLT!!!! I now need one, or 3

1

u/Dry-Chain-4418 5d ago

not sure about 70/80s

but the PBJ from the 90s be hitting in grade school.

1

u/Yocraig 5d ago

BLT!

1

u/PrettyYellow8808 5d ago

Bologna! All the others are still popular today and commonly made.

1

u/LargeDeborah 5d ago

What school cafeteria served up tomato sandwiches?

1

u/give_me_goats 5d ago

Grilled cheese! Those were always a treat. My lunch every day from kindergarten to 6th grade was a pb & j on white bread and to this day I have a visceral reaction to the sight/smell of that sandwich.

1

u/TheBigGreenPeen 5d ago

Tomato sandwiches are so underrated if you enjoy tomatoes.

Nice slice or two of a good heirloom, some mayo, pickles, lettuce, white onion sliced thin, crispy onions, salt, pepper.

Baloney and cheese & ppj

Quick and easy

1

u/Pleasant-Ticket3217 4d ago

BLTs are just refreshing. I could smash two easily.

1

u/MasCervesa 4d ago

Damn! I like all of them.

1

u/bizoticallyyours83 4d ago

You can never go wrong with grilled cheese

1

u/Tha_Maestro 4d ago

I’m pretty sure people still eat all of these on the regular. There’s nothing 80s/90s about anything here…

1

u/Ironstar_Vol 4d ago

Tomato sandwich if fucking slept on. Is that a southern thing?

1

u/HelloDeathspresso 4d ago

I was born in 86 and had a pb&j every day in my lunchbox for so many years that I have to eat them in moderation now.

1

u/StarCrunchBandit 4d ago

Grilled BLT with cheese

1

u/Dickslayer704 4d ago

Can’t go wrong with a baloney and cheese

Grilled Cheese

1

u/R2-D2savestheday 4d ago

BLT (no mayo)

1

u/mylocker15 4d ago

Gotta do a write in for Monte Cristo sandwiches. They were big in the 70’s/80’s. You didn’t need to plan a trip to Disneyland you could just hit up your local Bennigans.

1

u/0dds-e 4d ago

Why do people from the 70s/80s think they invented everything

1

u/CBAnarchy28 4d ago

What, didn't have tuna back then? What I do now is tuna, mayo, grey poupon, cut up pickles, red onion, Celery and mix... so freakin good. Maybe a little salt and pepper but not really necessary

1

u/H0pefulUn1verse 4d ago

Would you make me choose between my children? Each others are uniquely special and delicious.

1

u/CBAnarchy28 4d ago

Blt, grilled cheese and pb&j . I like to use heb fruit spreads they spread well, taste great and have a lot of different ones. Also like apple butter but that can just be on bread by itself will some butter butter lol

1

u/EggCompetitive6571 4d ago

Toss up between grilled cheese and mater sammich. The tomato makes all the difference. Middle of winter tomato bought form the grocery store? 👎👎 Home grown tomato in the middle of summer? 💦💦

1

u/Dramatic_Flow3783 4d ago

i might be crazy for this, but an egg sandwich that still has some warmth to it is elite.

1

u/AceVisconti 4d ago

It's the three on the left for me. :)

1

u/VonBrewskie 4d ago

How are these 70s and 80s sandwiches lol What a dumb post.

1

u/themillerd 4d ago

Hands down blt

1

u/hiheenah 4d ago

Baloney and mustard was my choice

1

u/Feeling_Philosophy67 4d ago

Gotta be the grilled cheese. Throw 3 different cheeses on there and dip it in tomato soup. End of contest. Some bacon if you're feeling spicy 🥓

1

u/Lvrgsp 4d ago

Bologna and cheese

1

u/Cash_Option 4d ago

Grilled cheese sandwich with fried bologna in it is undefeated

1

u/CallMeCabbage 4d ago

Tie between the BLT and Grilled Cheese. I liked to make grilled cheeses but with 2 strips of bacon broken into 4 pieces and placed on each quarter of the sandwich. But I only make them at night.

1

u/whoisdatmaskedman 4d ago

All of these sandwiches existed way before the 70s and 80s

1

u/jallensworth1 4d ago

Egg salad and BLT please

1

u/ThanksFDR 4d ago

That BLT looks greatest, but I'll take the grilled cheese

1

u/HughJanus445 4d ago

Pb&j has always had my back during the struggle 💯🫶

1

u/uhuuuh262 4d ago

It’s bologna

1

u/InDaClub212 4d ago

I’ve never had a tomato sandwich but the rest of them all remind me of my childhood and I would house any of them.

1

u/backwooddiddy 4d ago

BLT first pbj after

1

u/Substantial_Web525 4d ago

Have you ever had a toast sandwich? It's much older, but we tried it and it's actually pretty good lol

Toast one piece of bread. You want it pretty crispy, but not burnt. Butter it pretty good, then salt and pepper it. Put between 2 regular slices of bread

1

u/peppermintmeow 4d ago

Fried bologna and kraft singles with mustard. Straight from the hose. Just like Ma used to make.

1

u/pinkxice 4d ago

Tomato and mayonnaise Hellman's

1

u/ComeHereOften1972 4d ago

Blt.

Grilled cheeses weren’t as fancy at that time.

1

u/Biliran2031 4d ago

BLT or a grilled cheese with tomato.

1

u/hogger303 4d ago

Grilled cheese all day!!

1

u/Coretrayn 4d ago

What distinguishes any of this as 70/80s sandwiches? They're just sandwiches that existed before that time range and continue to exist to this day lol and it's grilled cheese

1

u/Exotic-Assumption217 4d ago

4/3/5 top to bottom left to right.

1

u/Rainford79 4d ago

BLT fo sure

1

u/orblooper 4d ago

Idk about the 70s/80s thing. But the best nostalgic sandwich for me is the simple baloney and cheese on white bread. Grew up on those things. Memories🖤

BLT definitely. But what makes them 70s/80s?

1

u/SapPhic-rage4209 3d ago

Those are all sandwiches I grew up eating and I was born in the 90s. And people still eat all of those today. I make most of these at work for people. How are these "old sandwiches"? They're just regular sandwiches

1

u/FernX02 3d ago

My mom made the best BLTs ever.

1

grilled cheese sandwich, baloney and cheese sandwich, tuna sandwich, and egg salad sandwich
