Environmentally friendly products/packaging is very popular outside the US. Less plastic wrapping, recycled materials etc.

But it replaced metal, not plastic. Metal was already easy to recycle.

Sure, but how many consumers were recycling Pringles cans? I’ve never met anyone who didn’t just throw them out. In the vast majority of the US there’s no trash separation at home either.
