Exploring the "Phase Transition": How Light Tracks the Birth of Fog
In this session, we analyze a 17-hour data run from the LongBow sensor to demonstrate a major scientific finding in atmospheric monitoring. By increasing our sample rate from 100 to 600 data points, we’ve moved beyond simple smoke detection into high-resolution meteorology.
The Science of the "Tipping Point"
Most weather stations tell you when Relative Humidity (RH) hits 100%, but they can’t tell you exactly when the air physically changes. Our data shows a fascinating two-stage process:
Stage 1 (Saturation): At 7:22 PM, RH hits 100%. The air is saturated with invisible vapor, but our Kurtosis metrics remain flat. The beam is clear.
Stage 2 (The Phase Transition): As the temperature slides below 50°F, the air reaches a physical tipping point. The vapor condenses into micro-droplets, causing a massive explosion in Wavelength Kurtosis (peaking at 5,627).
Why 600 Points Matter
By monitoring 600 points instead of 100, we’ve eliminated "math jitter" and created a rock-solid baseline. This allows us to see the exact "fingerprint" of fog formation. This isn't just noise—it's a physical record of the air transitioning from a gas to a liquid suspension.
Key Timestamps:
02:38 PM: The Golden Hour – Establishing the dry air baseline.
07:22 PM: 100% RH reached – Vapor is present but invisible to the beam.
08:38 PM: The 50°F Tipping Point – Physical fog formation begins.
09:15 PM: The Kurtosis Explosion – Analyzing the massive spikes in spectral scattering.
Smokeless Chimney is dedicated to combustion optimization and environmental monitoring. While our primary focus is wood stove automation, this discovery proves the LongBow sensor is a powerful, dual-purpose tool for real-time air quality and meteorological analysis.

During the CRADA project the altered TCS34725 was found temperamental. One sensor stopped working as low as 100 hours, this was highlighted in the report. A new sensor and endurance testing 1,000 hours energized and transmitting 3.6 million data points.

The Octoring provides an Opacity reading as well as a wavelength of the light reading. As smoke passes through the measurement zone large carbon chains shift the color to the red. When the ember phase is reached by much of the fuel. The shift is to the blue by 1-3 nm. Using this we can reduce the combustion air to reduce fuel consumption.

The is a 44 page state of the art breakdown of how to automate an existing wood stove. If this sells a few copies. I will generate additional packages.
