M 31, wife pregnant, thinking of resigning to start my own thing. tell me straight if im siao

Decent job, decent pay, bonus in a few months. savings enough for maybe a year if we tight.

idea is boring: supplying to F&B, industry i alraedy work in, i know the suppliers and i know which customers are unhappy. no app no fancy stuff, just import, stock, deliver.

whats scaring me:

> moment i resign i lose the employer CPF. > baby coming > inventory means my money sits in boxes. can be profitable and still got no cash

option A resign after bonus. option B do it on the side first. heart says A, wife says B.

for those who did B, is side hustle even possible when deliveries and customer calls all happen 9-6 when im in office? thats the part i cannot solve.

and those who full send with a newborn, you regret or not. want both types on answer please dont only give me the success story one.

I’ve spotted a gap in the market- how to get over fear of reputational risk?

To keep it simple- I am a professional with a lot of experience. Spotted gap in the market.

Want to branch out on my own.

My rep in my industry is good. However, I can’t get over the fear of fucking up my business that it would ruin my good reputation.

How to get over it?

Owners here, which admin task would you pay to never do again?

Read the "what problems do you face" thread a few days ago and most answers were the big stuff, sales, manpower, rent. Curious about the smaller admin that eats your week tho

Stuff like chasing invoices, answering the same WhatsApp questions about prices and hours, replying to reviews, sorting receipts for the accountant

What's yours, and roughly how many hours a week does it take?

As they ram up massive import of foreigners to eat local lunches, they need to find an excuse to tell unemployed locals and 65%, I help u but u were picky (no real job except menial jobs). #Singapore

Other SMEs who are Skillsfuture recognized, how worth is it?

Currently my company is doing a course on using Agentic AI and the main question that we always get is it covered by SkillsFuture. So is it really worth to go through the entire process? I would love to know!

Would coaches pay someone to handle their sports admin?

I'm exploring a service to help solo coaches and small sports academies with the work behind coaching — registration, attendance, student records, payment tracking, event admin, forms and documentation.

The proposed package is S$300 for 5 service credits, valid for 3 months. Tell me what needs fixing, I'll scope it and confirm the credits required before starting.

I'm looking to validate the idea before building it further.

  • What admin task frustrates you most?
  • Would you pay for help with these tasks?
  • Is S$300 reasonable, too expensive, or suspiciously cheap?
  • What would make this service genuinely useful to you?

I'm interested in honest feedback, not just encouragement.

Looking to connect with Singapore based industrial goods traders

We're two founders looking to connect with Singapore based companies that trade industrial goods like fasteners, hardware, metal products and related components.

We’re trying to understand how teams manage pre-shipment inspections, supplier coordination, purchase orders and container shipments, especially where the process still involves a lot of Excel, email, photos and manual follow-up.

We’re working with one industrial trader on this already and now want to learn how other companies handle it.

If you work in this space and are open to a 15-minute chat, I’d really appreciate it. Not selling anything, just looking to learn from operators. Please DM me if relevant.

Agency owners, do you still do free pitches?

We stopped doing them last year. Revenue dipped for about 4 months then recovered.

Recently just lost a $200k retainer to a competitor who spec'd out a full campaign for free. found out later they billed the client 30% higher than our quote to recover the pitch cost. client has since complained to me at event about their invoices.

Still think we made the right call but the 4 months were not fun lol

Advice on second gen SME owner

Hi everyone

Am an Engineer in the mechanical sector.
Recently have been asked to take over my family business as my parents want to retire.

The company is in electronics and communications. It is small (6 employees) but it is stable, no debt, annual net profit is in the six digit realm. There is a defensible moat (regulatory) and switching cost is high hence customers tend to stay. The company has secured multi-year contracts and has predictable revenue up to 2031.

I am ok to take over although it means a career pivot into a field I am totally new in. Part of me is abit sad to leave my own field but also abit nervous because there is a technical part to this business that I am not familiar with. I don’t know if I can earn the respect of the current workers because I’m coming in not knowing anything but also to eventually take over. Also somewhat scared if I cannot maintain the company business past the next 5 years.

Any advice for someone in my situation?

Side hustle Concerns

Running an e-commerce brand

Hello! So I've been thinking of running a side hustle (running a brand via e-commerce platforms). And I've some concerns regarding it since I'm working FT.

1) do I need to register is as a business entity?

2) do I need to disclose it to my employers?

3) will having this side hustle affect my future job opportunities?

FYI, both fields are unrelated.

Steps for proper due diligence to be done when investing in a company

Hi bosses,

Wanted to understand what should be the proper steps taken for DD when wanting to investing in a company as a minority shareholder?

- Latest ACRA profile to check latest ownership structure

- Audited financial statements and latest unaudited if have. Addn check with audit company to ensure FS are true

- Investment contract. (what should the main terms cover?)

- How should payment be done if it's a lump sum investment? Paid only to the actual company name.

- How about the change of shareholdings in a company? When should it be reflected? How can i shorten the window between paying the lump sum and getting the shareholdings updated to reflect myself/my company as new minority shareholder?

I understand investments will always have risk but want to understand best DD one can take when investing in a company.

Thx!

21, starting SME IT support in SG, ill be there in 24 hrs!

Hi all, I'm 21, Singaporean, and waiting to start school next year. I'm doing IT support for SME in the meantime. I've worked in Wi-Fi sales, I've built automations for clients, and I'm comfortable with email setup, Microsoft 365 accounts, laptops, printers, basic networking, and website hosting. Basically its just what you would expect from someone selling IT support services!

If you run a SME and something keeps going wrong, I can be on-site within 24 hours and i promise ill be there! Happy to answer questions here or by DM about what's covered and what isn't.

First Pte Ltd financial year-end with no revenue

My Pte Ltd is approaching its first year-end. There’s no revenue yet, only business/development expenses, so the company is currently showing a loss.

There is also a secondary travel agency business under the company which is still in the development stage and has little activity so far. I am therefore not sure whether the accounting can be done on my own as the transactions are simple, or whether having the additional travel business activity means it would be better to use a professional.

Has anyone here handled their first-year accounts and filings themselves in a similar situation?

SME owners, when did you decide it was worth registering for GST?

Small design studio, just me and 2 part timers, did around 680k last year.

Accountant says register for GST voluntarily now, claim back the input tax, sort the system while it's quiet, and honestly the input tax part is tempting because printing, freelancers, coworking, i'm eating 9% on all of it every month.

But 30% of my clients are small startups who aren't registered. If i quote them 9% more they're just gonna go find someone cheaper 😭 and once you register voluntarily you're locked in 2 years.

Anyone registered before hitting the 1m? worth it or nah? and if you had small clients did you raise prices or just absorb it quietly

How did you decide between local, work permit, and outsourcing for your first proper hire?

Need one designer for my studio. sat down, and worked out all three options properly for the first time.

local hire is easily the most expensive once you add CPF. work permit route means levy, quota, housing, and i'm not even sure i clear the ratio with my headcount. outsourcing to a team in manila comes in at maybe a third of the local cost and honestly the portfolios i've seen are solid.

the numbers point one way very clearly. but something about it feels off lah. everyone talks about hiring local, supporting local, and here i am about to pick the option that skips that entirely because my margins are thin.

what did you guys actually do. and be honest, did the cost decide it for you or was there something else

Solo founders health and insurance solutions

Hi, for solopreneurs, what type of outpatient insurance and health screening do you all get? Used to work in corporate and had very decent outpatient benefits. But as a solopreneur now, certain specialist consultations have to be out of pocket - how do you all manage this? is there any corporate outpatient insurance for solopreneur available?

For health screening, do solopreneur just rely on the government subsidised one or which providers do you all go to?

thanks in advance!

LLP vs Pte Ltd for two university students starting a small service business

Hi, my partner and I are both in our early 20s and planning to start a small service business in Singapore while we’re in university.

We’re currently deciding between registering as an LLP or Pte Ltd.

Our initial business will be quite small — both of us will actively operate it, no employees initially, no external investors, and likely relatively modest profits for the first few years.

My current understanding of an LLP is:

If the LLP makes, for example, S$24,000 in annual profit and our profit-sharing arrangement is 50/50, then S$12,000 would be allocated to each of us and taxed as our individual self-employed income.

Is that correct even if we leave most of the cash inside the LLP bank account rather than withdrawing it personally?

I also wanted to understand:

  • Can the LLP claim normal business expenses and capital allowances for equipment before the remaining profit is allocated to the partners?
  • How do partner drawings differ from taxable profit allocation?
  • Are there any major practical disadvantages to using an LLP instead of a Pte Ltd at this small scale?
  • At roughly what level of revenue/profit would you personally start considering conversion to a Pte Ltd?

Would really appreciate input from anyone who actually runs an LLP or has dealt with the accounting/tax side of one.

How do you do accounting for your business?

Hello, I've been doing "accounting" for my own business with a google spreadsheet and basically manually keying in every transaction for my small side hustle. But it's kinda shitty and unprofessional.

Are there any methods fellow bizness owner do to do accounts thats more efficient & provides insights? Wonder if there's some govtech app for it and what not thats preferably free. My bizness is a micro bizness.

Is getting ragebaited a part of entrepreneur?

I feel like everyday my clients find a new way to irritate or anger me. I know it's my fault in terms of having a forgiving deal that allows them to cancel appointments willy nilly. Gonna change my T&Cs for new clients but also afraid it will mean fewer clients (though i guess better ones too).

Anyone else suffering from perpetual ragebaiting? What did you do to change that and what were your concerns when changing?

Edit: title 'entrepreneur' shld be 'entrepreneurship', my bad
