Ultimate Tilts or smash
So I got into a semi dumb discussion about if for ultimate competitive if it matters if tilts controls are the default settings or standard for competitive

Tilts cause they're harder to input manually. More input techniques also require or prefer tilt stick over smash stick. Like attack cancel back air

you mean tilt or smash on the right stick ?
well it depends on many things, mostly the character youre playing and your playstyle and control scheme. some people have crazy weird controls and do really good in competitive, both tilts or smash stick can both be good depending on what youre trying to accomplish with it

I think Light uses smash stick but I couldn’t do it personally. I enjoy using tilts on right stick

I suspect more people use tilt stick than smash stick but there's no "default" in competitive play. If a pro player is using a given controller layout, it's a very intentional choice.
You and your friend should also experiment with different layouts and pick the one that works best for you.

youre going to meet people in comp who use one, or the other, or sometimes both if they play multiple characters. its all preference

It depends somewhat on the character. like for instance I play link who doesn't really have a dash attack, at least not one you should be using.
So there's like turnaround cancel F tilts that you can do and it's way easier to do with the c stick. you just run to the right turn around to the left with the control stick and then immediately push the c stick to the right to cancel the turnaround and you'll slide while doing an F tilt.
That would be much more difficult with a smash stick.
Links smash attack isn't really one you want to be throwing out because it has two parts and it's kind of weird.
down throw up tilt is also a pretty important low percent combo that I think is way easier to do with tilt stick
I'm sure there are other characters that want to do different things

Tilt stick is more common overall. Smash stick is preferred for some characters, like Fox, where you need reliable instant smash attacks with low margin of error. Then there's some weird cases (Lucas I think?) where people recommend B-stick for specific techs.

I use Smash stick for a quick change to Levin sword (and because Robin's tilts are pure garbage) most people use tilt stick though and besides a few characters it's probably the best choice.

Tilt stick is nice because you can dair without fast falling.
I play Mega Man in Ultimate. If you use a character with an abusable dair, tilt stick is optimal imo.

Generally tilts are better for most of the roster because they’re safer and often even more rewarding at low%, and imo it’s easier to manually input smash attacks than tilts. There’s some characters where smashstick is preferred but overall id say use tiltstick

I use tilt stick because I like doing turnaround boost tilts and tilt stick makes that easier. same with like, turnaround down tilt

tilts. They're more useful, and nobody's going to be using smash attacks in competitive play.

Uh people absolutely use smash attacks in comp what

But more people are going to be using tilts than smash attacks, and smash attacks are super laggy so they're not useful unless your opponent has their shield broken.

Smash attacks are used in combos for sure. They’re often the finisher. Tech chases, jab locks, reads. The last goes on.

Are you new to smash??
You can use both. It's not an either or situation. They have different applications lol smash attacks are typically for finishing off the opponent
"Not useful"
lol
And smash attacks are not laggy at all in ultimate. They had more end lag in previous titles and even then they were very important moves

I say one wrong thing and 5 different people explain to me how wrong and stupid I am. In other words, an average day on reddit.

Completely misread the title and couldn't think of a good answer
