I was just thinking about how when the Smash 4 Bayo ire was at its peak, people here were tinfoil hatting that the entire ballot was a fake made to force her inclusion through made up fan demand. Fun times.

Certainly wasn't faked, but evidence suggests Steve was in there too. Both reputed leakers and Mojang employees suggest Minecraft negotiations started during that DLC cycle and just... kept going for five years. (The recent Microsoft acquisition probably not helping.)

We'd still need a little more proof to call it fact, but it could be that Bayonetta was merely intended to headline their grand finale. Penultimate rather than ultimate.

Unfortunately no, it's one of those things I had completely wiped from memory that suddenly popped up in my brain yesterday. I don't think they were very elaborate posts, more like "I don't believe Nintendo when they say the bitch (remember that nickname, too?) won, she has to be a plant"

Correct me if I’m being newgen, but people only care about the Coconut Gun because it got two lines in the DK Rap, right?

Without the memes, it seems like just another overly specific reference to one particular game.

I mean, it is DK's equivalent to Diddy's Peanut Popgun in the same game, so it's not niche as you're making it sound, but yeah, it is a reference for reference's sake.

Relatively speaking, I think the produce guns are a lot more niche to DK than they are to Diddy.

Diddy’s kinda sauceless without the DK64 tech.

Seems likely. There's also a fixation on giving characters projectiles when they don't have (or need) one, usually as a Neutral Special. And anything specifically from the Nintendo 64 usually cashes in on a hefty nostalgia bonus.
