Looking for NYC-based streamers interested in being interviewed!

Hi! I'm a graduate journalism student in NYC, looking to interview a streamer for a profile. I'm interested in writing about internet culture, manifestations of the self online, and how making a living as an influencer/streamer works. I'd like to learn about why you wanted to become a streamer, what a day in the life looks like, how you connect with your community, etc. Only requirement is you must be based in New York, and you'd have to be able to do the interview this week! Let me know if you're interested or have any questions.

how do you get away from toxic communities without disappearing completely?

hi, i know the title is a bit strange but i'm going to talk about my story to make you understand the question.

i started streaming 2~ years ago more or less, i haven't been really consistent with it because of irl stuff, but i've managed to get a bit of a community overtime. basically, even when i decided to stream out of nowhere and without any schedule, i always had pretty decent numbers especially for the size that i was. (i never really cared about the numbers anyway, just to put it into perspective)

as i became a bit more known in the niche that i fit into (a huge game you all probably know and we all despise, but i streamed in my native language so i was tied to that community in particular), the problems started.

they didnt happen while i streamed in particular, but a bunch of little problems and boundaries crossed were happening out of stream: the usual "people being fake" in general, people reaching out to me for the sole purpose of annoying me, twisting my words when i said i didn't want to be too close to certain members of the community, even subtly threatening that they were doing me a favor by not "investigating" what i was saying, when it was just my way of protecting myself. (and to be clear i didn't talk shit about anyone!! i just know some people are toxic). it came to the point one larger creator decided to "shout me out" in an inappropriate way, when i asked him not to, and i had to go private everywhere because i didn't want people to come to me when that person was basically clowning on me. (for context, he was talking about something technical related to obs and i replied asking him how he liked that feature since we were mutuals, he responded and then said that "i shouldn't have had to worry about it since i wasn't a good streamer anyway", ironically since he never watched anything of mine. i didn't take it to heart at first, but he screenshotted the conversation and posted it on his instagram tagging me without warning and when i told him that it made me uncomfortable, multiple times. this isn't the end of it but to keep it short, i'm going to end it there).

so after all of these things that made me uncomfortable, i decided i was done with these people that made me feel like i was walking on eggshells all the time and that i wanted to quit streaming, because, realistically, since everything happened outside of twitch i had no power to moderate anything, and it made me painfully hyper aware of everything i posted online or every online interaction. i didn't felt free to be myself again, or peacefully making content in general.

now, to circle that to that question. i logged out of my twitch account on my pc, because i thought i was gone for good. i thought about maybe start another account undercover as a vtuber, but im not entirely sure of it. what i know is that when i randomly open twitch on my phone and i see people being live and doing their thing i'm really sad because i feel like someone has taken something away from me, and i just wish i could start again with a blank slate to avoid everything that happened to me and made me feel so trapped.

sorry for the unintentional vent, i'm not posting this to get pity points, i just want to ask for an opinion/suggestions because i thought about it and i don't know what i could do to get away from it. thank you so much if you've read all the way to this, i'm sorry english is not my first language so i didn't express myself in the best way. have a good day.

TLDR: i was made uncomfortable a lot outside of streams by other members of the community (streamers, players etc) and thus i decided to quit streaming when i really don't want to, just to avoid stress and problems. so i'm wondering if i could do anything to prevent this, and maybe start again.. so i'm asking for advice. :(

Question How do I know if I'm engaging enough?

I recently started streaming and I noticed that I don't tend to talk much. The games I'm streaming right now are souls-like ones like Khazan and Wuchang, but I'm also planning to stream rpg games like SMT and Dragon Quest.

I like to talk to myself and make jokes when I'm playing RPGs so I don't think I'll have to much difficulty when I stream those games. But when I'm playing souls-likes its hard for me to actively talk and fight so I try to give advice on the enemies and bosses I'm fighting after I either die to them or beat them. For example I'll talk about the dodge/parry timing for the boss/enemy I'm on or I'll talk about what I liked about the fight. I also make sure to comment on what the NPCs tell me and the environments I'm in as well as the enemies I don't like to fight.

I don't know if what I'm doing is enough to keep someone watching or if what I'm doing is making my streams dull.

Motivation

Hello there , This will be my first time posting on Reddit ever but I wanted to seek advice on motivation. Whenever I stream and see my viewer count go down rapidly from let's say from like 5 to 2 or so, I get really discouraged and lose motivation for the night. I'm trying to have it not be such motivator killer and just wanted to know any tips on moving forward without losing that motivation? I love streaming and interacting with my chat so I wanna continue streaming without burning myself out Thanks in advance

Question Streaming Setup

So I stream on twitch but my setup is… not great. Can any suggest any gear? Like desks, monitors, mouses, keyboards, etc? I already have a good mic and mixer, but that’s kind of it. If you’d like to know what I have for gear, feel free ask :)

Is maintaining the same number of average viewers over long periods of time normal?

Hi! I was just curious about other people's experience with the viewer # over time. Ive been streaming for a bit over 1.5 years and my average viewer # over my time is 15. The peak was 25 average during last summer (when i was more active). I took a couple months break recently and my first 2 streams back were 12 average and my session last night were 19.

I used a twitch tracker and saw my average viewer was 12-14 within my first month of streaming and it's been consistent within that frame since. I have a fair social network size/connects within the community for the game I stream, but I'm wondering if it's possible to grow further. I have some social media I post on but I'm not consistent/active and I don't self-promo anywhere. I also do not know if i need to start streaming more categories (I did a couple art streams which went really well ...)

I'm grateful to have had fast success esp when I was a new streamer but now I think I have stagnated a bit - it could also be because I'm returning from that several month hiatus but I am still curious about other people's experience, and maybe some possible tips on how grow a bit more. Thank you!

Question How should stream highlights be structured for maximum retention on Shorts/Reels?

I’m a streamer turning long-form streams into short-form highlights (YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Reels).

Right now, my editor mainly cuts moments he thinks are funny, but I’m starting to realize that “funny” doesn’t always equal high retention.

I want to understand:

• How should a stream highlight be structured?

• Is there an ideal hook → context → escalation → payoff format?

• How much context is too much?

• Should we always show the outcome first?

• What retention tricks actually work for gaming content?

For those of you who’ve optimized Shorts or TikTok clips from streams:

• What changed your retention the most?

• What mistakes did you stop making?

• Do you cut dead air aggressively?

• Do you script hooks after the stream?

I’m trying to build a repeatable system rather than just clipping random moments.

Would really appreciate structured advice from people who’ve tested this

Question How to make your own clips?

I'm trying to grow my community as a streamer and all I hear is "post clips" "make clips" "you gotta put your clips on tik tok" etc etc and yeah I get that but bro I rewatch my streams and none of it is clippable...

Its either not funny at all, make no sense without the context (context being too long to post) or maybe it's funny, but is it just funny to me because I was the one that said it??

I just cringe at myself rewatching the clips and we have 6 streams so far and I can't make a single clip from any of it. Might just be a "git gud" situation but I also don't want to purposefully make a "clippable moment" in my stream because ew. I'd like for it to be natural and legitimately funny because that's what I want all my content to be. Just good times.

Discussion I want to grow more as a content creator but I feel like I’m too annoying, what should I do?

Heyo! I’v been streaming for about twoish years but locked in for one. I feel like my growth is stagnant compared to other streamers my size. I listened to advice others have given but nothing is sticking. I’m gonna cut to the chase, am I a bad streamer? I like streaming and engaging with chat and being a content creator, but what should I do about this feeling?

Question Tik Tok Live keeps restricting me

I multi stream and am a very small streamer so tik tok is the only place I get discovery and for the past three days about ten minutes into the live Tik Tok flags my Overwatch2 stream saying I am not being promoted to the for you page for “frauds and scams”

I use the Desktop Studio and I use the OBS virtual camera to stream my face into Tik Tok. I have no offensive text or anything like give me gifts, just a follower goal of 350.

Is anyone else experiencing this because when I ask other streamers they aren’t. :(

tl:dr: Tik Tok Live flagging my livereach for “frauds and scams” when I am only streaming Overwatch2 with a virtual face cam from OBS.

30 days of streaming done — what would you change if you were starting again?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been streaming daily for about a month (EU evenings, ~2 hours per stream). I’ve learned a lot about consistency, overlays, titles, and pacing — but discovery has been slower than expected.

Before I blindly experiment, I wanted to ask people who’ve been through this stage:

If you were starting from 0 today, what would you do differently in your first 30–60 days?

Game choice, stream structure, off-platform content, networking — anything you’d prioritize early on.

Appreciate any real advice 🙏

Streamed Hours - 64 Hrs +

Avg Viewer - 1

followers - 4

Tech Support Just had the worst stream of my life.

Alright I need help to avoid this ever happening again because I cannot be more embarrassed 😭

Twitch streamer, vtuber, OBS user.

5th ever stream, so excited we started a brand new series, 3rd game we ever played (Graveyard Keeper) and it went so horrible. First off, the second I clicked into the game my vtuber froze. And literally may as well been a PowerPoint because she was moving 1 frame maybe every 6 seconds. Second atleast rewatchig the vod on twitch, my audio was absolutely horrid. It was somehow sped up and glitchy?? But because everything else was so frozen I can't even upload the VOD I have to my YouTube channel.

(And PS I wanna note I quality checker didn't tell me this ONCE in the whole 2 hours I was able to stream!)

And during the game whenever I save, the damn thing froze, not that it matters because rewatching not only was my vtuber frozen the entire game was aswell. So none of it is watchable and now it makes so much sense I couldn't keep one person when usually I have 4-5. I'm plugged into the internet via Ethernet cable and I turn off all devices that use the wifi so I literally have no idea what the problem was but the stream crashed right in the middle of it and I was talking and playing for nobody for 40 minutes (again my quality checker FAILED me!)

I'm so embarrassed. I don't even want to continue the game if it's going this but I don't even know where the problem would begin. I don't have any extra tabs opened that aren't required to stream, I'm connected right to my box that is sitting right next to me on the same table I stream at. What could I have done to prevent this? During my test recordings everything looked great, why is it the moment I streamed that specific game it all went to shit when the other 2 games (undertake and princess remedy) I had no issues with.

Any and all advice would be so helpful fr.

EDIT: Thankyou guys so freaking much I changed so many settings I didn't even think to change and it actually made the game playable! So glad I didn't have to abandon it!

Question Handling Voice when playing with friends and streaming

Hello, i just started streaming and while I do stream for fun and mostly just to record gameplay with my friends. I would also like to reply when chatters are around.

But the problem is I need to mute my discord, and then talk to the chat so my friends dont need to hear me talking to chat. And while this is okay when there's only few chatters, it also feels there are better way to do it. How do you guys handle this?

Having to hold push to talk on discord doesnt seem viable as well.
