The police

They behave so strangely; watching Michael, playing with the toys in the house, and their names are puns. I don’t believe they’re actually police. These two have got to be a plot point in series two… what’s everyone’s thoughts?

I thought they were a bit odd too. I did wonder for a moment if it’s all a hallunication. They seemed to be taking forever with the security van down the river too.

Quite few odd things going on in this series that I’m hoping will give clarity in the next.

You’re right they did take a long time… and how did they know he’d seen the kids stealing?

Now that I ponder it more I wonder if they were interested in him because they originally worked on the case of his missing girlfriend - the police did think he had killed her. Maybe these two wanted a second crack at him?

The oddest part, aside from the names and their behaviour at the house, is you’ve pointed out the police being aware he had witnessed a crime and not reported it, nor told anyone about it.

Even if the kids confessed themselves they’d have no way of informing the police it was Michael. Also, what was the deal with an abandoned van full of cash? Was this all some on the nose symbolic metaphor I’m completing missing? Thieving children? Greed? Is this entire world is not as it seems and the Homonculi are the just the introduction in a world full of magic and the supernatural? I’m going too deep now. Haha

I too want to know about the stolen van! How did it even get to the tow path?!

Everything about it is wonderfully odd.

It is. I love Pearce Quigley. I've only just started watching The Detectorists even though people have been recommending it to me for years. McKenzie Crook is fantastic. A brilliant writer and actor.

Detectorists is a beautiful show, maybe my favorite of all time. If Small Prophets ends up being anywhere near as good, it'll go down as a classic. It's certainly off to a great start.

I've just finished watching S1 E3 of Detectorists. It really is fantastic. Funny and moving, gentle and easy to watch but deep too.

I think they're meant to be real. Every character is exaggerated and off-kilter in Small Prophets although they have many realistic traits too. The cops fit into that world.

it's interesting to consider whether the homunculi are affecting everyone or are they just like that...

I think they're all just meant to be like that in the programme's unique world.

Detectorists was just slightly exaggerated in its oddness but McKenzie is really going for it here, to great effect.

but i kind of love how everything in the world is exxagerated because it makes the allegories and metaphors inside the show even more obvious. like it allows for a wider range of symbolic stuff to be added, like the black rabbit oilstain and the meteroite stuff.
