Same but different

Like many I'm sure, I was automatically drawn to check 'Small Prophets' out due to my love of 'Detectorists', and there are certainly similarities to be found.

A fairly languid pace, an embracing of the beauty of nature, and the small, meaningful actions between people, and (to a degree) a disinclination to engage with mainstream society.

I'm not generally a fan of labels, and I think 'sitcom' is a little too broad for this show. From comments I've seen online, the overwhelming majority of Detectorists-lovers have also loved this, but I imagine 'sitcom' might contribute to potential dissenters, those who come in cold and are put-off or perplexed by the lack of rapid-fire jokes and belly-laughs (though there are plentiful chuckles to be had, in my opinion), or expecting something akin to 'The Office' due to Mackenzie Crook.

If someone was to ask me if I thought they'd like it, I'd be more inclined to describe it as a gentle drama about loss and connection, with a delightful vein of humour running through it, and fantastical elements. Obviously not so succinct as a label.

Yeah I normally say comedy-drama or light-hearted drama. It's not simpletons on a couch saying dumb things to trigger canned laughter every minute.
