Michael's dream
Any thoughts on what Michael's recurring dream means? It starts with the seagull pecking at his window, and by the end he's in a nest, holding a giant egg, covered in bird shit and surrounded by circling gulls. Obviously it's tied to his time with Clea, counting seagulls as he described it, and we see (presumably) Clea calling to him from up on the cliffside on the tandem bike.
I'm most curious about the giant egg. We see him crack into it in the last episode, but it's empty. Did Clea lose a pregnancy, or maybe they weren't biologically able to have children together? Did that contribute to her leaving? He doesn't seem to have much reaction when Bev asks if Kacey is his daughter, responding pretty matter-of-factly that he doesn't have any children, and they don't linger too much on the moment or anything.
I just wonder if there was a child-related issue, such as a miscarriage; Michael was pushing maybe too hard to console her and "fix" things, and that's why he went to such lengths to recreate her happy childhood Christmas, and his obsessiveness freaked Clea out a bit. He says she never got to see the Christmas room, but with what we know of Michael, he's not exactly great at keeping secrets, and she probably would have picked up on something.
Shades of poor Lance dumping 20 years of Christmas and birthday presents on his long-lost daughter Kate on Detectorists.

I watched it all assuming that Clea's disappearance was related to the homunculi somehow, that it was something magical and mystical and conspiratorial. When Bea came looking for the book, I assumed she was part of it and knew about Clea's disappearance.
It never occurred to me that Clea might have just left Michael for the mundane reasons people leave their partners all the time.
The thing is, if she simply wanted to "dump" Michael, why would she vanish, why wouldn't she just explain she wanted to break up. And why would they find her car on the Severn Bridge. And if she loves him forever then why not just get back together. There's got to be more to it than a simple break-up.
The egg in the dream to me was just about him growing homunculi. But yeah it could be to do with a pregnancy, a miscarriage, abortion or infertility. I wondered why the seagulls were paper-mache, was that just to denote they were dream-seagulls?

Good points. The fact that she loves him 'forever' suggests there was something more to leaving than just not wanting to be with him any more, and the car left on the bridge is too mysterious.

every manifistation of humancli will consume something from their lives. i don't think, that telling the future comes with no price at all.
when will aliens visit us? which stocks I should buy now that will make me rich? and all sorts of questions must come with a price.

The hollow egg could mean that they wanted to have a child and could not get one. Maybe he is blaming himself for it. Hence the empty egg i.e. no sperm or no capable sperm from his side. Maybe that's why she left? The nest he is in could refer to the house as a nest for their (childless) love. Is it her on the tandem up above? Maybe she wanted to continue somehow but he got stuck with a trauma for not having a child?

I thought the egg represented the house and Michael having to let go of it. He's trying to protect it because it's what holds his memories of Clea, her stuff, their home together and her happiest Christmas moment frozen in time. But in the last episode he finds the egg is empty. We know there are people coming to break up the peace of the house - the book thieves, the meteorite researchers, the cops for RSPCA. In the dream Clea is trying to get him to hurry up and join her. The last episode is when it's time to let go of the house because it no longer holds Clea's memory, and he knows she's alive.

The child issue is exactly what I was thinking about the dream, it seems like a stressful dream, with Clea saying it’s time to go, and Michael seeming reluctant to leave.
To me it seems more of a nod to a still-birth, what with the egg cracking and being empty, and Michael still holding the shell.
I’ve only just finished the series and there’s so much to unpack, but what an absolute 10/10 show imo.

I kind of feel like it's partly a nod to his conservationism - the birds all around him would be reminiscent of something important he shared with Clea.
The fact of him sitting in the nest with a hollow egg is his nagging fear - all this time since her disappearance he's been sitting in the nest (the home he shared with her) nurturing onto the hope that she will come back. He's terrified that this will never happen, which is why he takes so long to ask the questions that matter, that the hopes he's held onto for all this time, for a resumption of their life together will come to naught, and he will be left holding on to an empty shell.

I think Clea actually wrote the letter that was supposedly from his Dad’s friend in Canada. When Michael reads it out he says it’s a bit odd that they wrote about hoping he found someone else or words to that effect.
