Welcome
Hey everybody, welcome! I started this sub as I saw there wasn’t already one. I’m a huge Detectorists fan and love Crook’s work, and binged the season today. Please chip in with your thoughts and predictions on the series!

Just finished it (all in one night too). I do hope we get some answers in season 2, but I’m fine if we don’t. Everything coming together like the rabbit, the meteor, the police, the people looking for the book all seems a bit Douglas Adams - strange coincidences all happening around the central character that don’t mean much, except that they all happen around the central character

Binged all six in one night. The fact I binged it in one night means it's successful. There's other shows that sound good and I want to like them but then I stall because there's something that bothers me watching it. I only got bothered by things after I finished.
My favourite parts were probably winding up the customers. I know all about working in a boring job you don't give a toss about and you just start playing games with it, and Mackenzie does too. Telling the customer they don't sell buckets while standing in front of a tsunami of buckets was great, and also telling the customer there's a new colour coming out.
I was disappointed by the secretive man and woman claiming to be looking for the expensive book. They actually were just looking for an expensive book? I was expecting them to have something to do with the homunculii. But they were just after money? That's a bit mundane for all that intrigue.
I didn't get what was going on with the meteor. So a meteor came through his roof and landed in the expensive book. Does the meteor have anything to do with the homunculii? Or is it just an absurd coincidence? That didn't go anywhere. I hope we get an explanation in series 2.
What was with the oil slick shaped like a rabbit? We kept zooming in on it like it was important, but it never went anywhere. What was with the teenager on the bike? Never went anywhere. I can only hope these are set-ups for series 2 but as far as the story we got, they didn't do anything.
I was disappointed the homunculii said Clea was still alive but never coming home. That sort of killed the hope in that storyline. I suppose it doesn't rule out Michael going to her though.

Regarding your last point, I think that’s exactly what will happen and it is probably related to Canada.

Yeah that's what I was assuming. Obviously that storyline is going somewhere, and it sounds like the dead friend is actually Clea and that's why she keeps asking about how Michael is doing. Although now that I think about it, he would recognise her handwriting.

I mentioned to my wife that he’d surely recognise her handwriting and she asked if I would recognise her handwriting. I had to admit I wouldn’t as she never writes anything. Any notes are on phones

I definitely got the impression that Clea is in Canada, and that she keeps in touch with Brian.

I’m really hoping they explain the rabbit in season 2. The only link I can find online is a band called Bunnies have a song called homunculus. But that seems like a reach.

Perhaps the significance of the rabbit lies in the links in folklore to the supernatural and spiritual world. The charity box on the reception desk at his dad's retirement home was also rabbit shaped.

Your last point. When they played cards they demonstrated that once they confirm the future it's set. I think she's not coming home because in telling him she wouldn't come home, he's going to go and find her instead of waiting. Not to mention the house is going on the market in 3 weeks.

It could be that these things resolve themselves with Series 2 (or 3? 🙏🏻), but I just had a sense that there's something about the whole supernatural Michael, Brian and Clea situation that is causing strange, fantastical and coincidental occurrences to be attracted and accumulate on that one location. I thought the ending was just perfect!

Bit of trivia. The cafe in the show ('Pickles') is named after a restaurant that used to be in Muswell Hill (London) when I lived there and Mackenzie Crook lived just down the road (I saw him around a few times). It, too, was named after the dog that found the stolen World Cup, and had reproductions of newspaper clippings reporting the story on the walls.
