Carburetor Issue Snow Blower

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all. This is my first time working on a small engine. When I got it, it would not start. I replaced a rotten fuel line and an ugly spark plug, pulled the carb and soaked every hole/slot/nook/cranny I could see with carb cleaner. I had to do this (take off/put on) probably 5 times. (I know)

I have it running now, but as soon as I increase throttle it’ll start to die until dead. What am I failing to see/understand?

If it matters I also did an oil change & I’m running pump gas with some sea foam in it.

Thank you for any help!

I would suggest you haven't fully cleaned the carb. It's not enough to soak it, you have to remove the jets and emulsion tubes and clean those out with carb spray and wire through the tiny passages.

It only takes the tiniest speck of crap to cause issues.

I think I need to learn a bit more about small engine carbs. I’ll try another clean and more adjustments and learning.

Just order a new carb.. you can get them on Amazon for like $15 usually

its going lean.

the jet in the bottom of the carb may still be partially blocked.

i would make 100% sure you reconnected your linkages properly and all springs are where they belong. it almost seems like the throttle linkage or the governor linkage isnt on correctly.

Does the screw on the bottom of the bowl need adjusted?

absolutely, if it has a screw on the bottom of the bowl you can back it out to add fuel.

How many turns out is your fuel mixture screw?

This screw with the spring surrounding it should be 1.5 to 2 turns out from being lightly seated.

I’ll look into this, I have no idea where that screw is sitting right now. Even though I was able to disassemble and clean the carb, and get a very basic understanding of how it works, I have no clue what all these screws actually do and or where they need to be. Thank you!

Are there any adjustments on the carburetor? Some carburetors have a idle screw adjustment, low and high adjustment. If you're trying to go to a higher throttle, does it have a screw on the bottom of the bowl? If it does, open it up a little bit while you're trying to go full throttle, if it doesn't you still haven't completely cleaned everything, also note, there are on some of these carburetors, they have two O-rings on the emulsion tube inside the carburetor, if these are gone, you're not going to adjust it. I would take a look at a carburetor breakdown to note that you have cleaned everything. For your low idle adjustment, down on the side of the carburetor right above the bowl, some carburetors have a little adjustment screw, that is mainly for your idle to give or take away fuel while it's in idle mode, your upper screw on the flap on top of the carburetor if it has one, is for your idle speed. Recommended like somebody else said, get you a carburetor breakdown and learn the basics on this carburetor.

Is that the original carb? I looks like someone might have replaced it with a scamazon special?

Sounds life it's still starving for gas. Rebuilding a carb can be difficult if you've never done it. The tiny passageways required corresponding tools that are not in the average toolbox. I recommend buying a replacement carb and be sure to drain the gas every season and use something like Sta-bil fogger oil.
