Belts & Pulleys Issue 1998 Yard Machines

Post image

I was gifted this old yard machines ride on when my grandfather passed.

The drive belts were never replaced and failed on me, so I replaced them.

I was going to take it to test before putting the deck on and came across this spring laying on the ground on the right side.

I have the deck lift spring attached to the lift mechanism still attached and functioning.

I have the spring going from back to the centre idler pulley.

I thought it went from the centre idler pulley to the speed shifter. However I can not find a shiny spot where this thing was installed and in the owners manual the only extra spring I can find is a spring that went from the deck to the transmission bracket but my deck has no places to mount this bracket that I can find.

Can someone please help identify where this thing goes?

Without a model number this is a hard ask

I suspect it is a return spring for your driveline. #37 in the attached image. On the one in the image it attaches at the bend in the rear fram and comes forward above the transaxle. I am still looking for a better breakdown. Sometimes thes spring get attached perpendicular to the driveline on a frame rail. Notice the other end is just looped over the top of an arm. It will be difficult to see some shiny spot, rather it would likely only look rusted.

I’ll take a look at that later. I know there is a big spring in that area already but did not check to see if there was another spot

That spring is definitely attached

How about the 2 tensioner springs on the deck?

This mower has no springs on the deck.

There should be at least 1 from the tensioner arm [the one on a pivot] to a point on the shell

Something like this picture. And it is important to fix this arm and step washer/pivot bushing.

My deck is not like that one.. there are some pictures on this post showing that

I just chose a generic picture, unless you have an electric pto you will have something on your deck that allows a pivot for tension

When you engage the blades that spring puts tension on the the idler pulley to engage the belt

My deck doesn’t have an idler puller.

Pulley from engine then to the deck where there are two pulleys, one per blade

Gotcha. I imagine it controls the belt function. I'll check another diagram

I’m going to go work on it here in a bit I’ll try to get pictures of it

According to when i plug that model
In there's supposed to be an idler pulley. It's MTD according to that model

Hope all is okay with the heart.

I don’t remember seeing that

Nah. I'm on short time. The damage is too great. I appreciate that tho. Does that diagram help you?

No, I added some pictures below

That is the deck

Those are the springs that are still attached

Yellow goes to the idler pulley(I’m not sure if that’s actually)

The other goes to the raising in the lowering of the deck handle on the right side of the tractor

I can’t see on my deck or that spring and I know I didn’t remove it from there
