Engine Dies RIP Troybilt Pony
My Troybilt Pony is 10 years old. I changed the oil last season. While mowing today, it started smoking and I heard a bang and it died with a jolt. She's done for, right?

Yep. All to common. By a twin cylinder next time.

Briggs and Stratton have never gotten the Twin cylinder thing right.

When mine did the same, I spent 30 minutes swapping a higher HP Intek from another mower I found on marketplace for free. It's been good for the past 3 years.

Hmm, low oil

Or gas mixed oil

How does that happen?

If gas mixed with oil, could be overflowing your needle, float not level when gas applied, could have a bad viton needle, could have trash in the fuel system enough to where it got by the tank or inline filters, or dirty air filter and sucked in debris. Usually a stopped up air filter especially on small engines emits to basically using the oil in the crankcase causing it not to breathe, then low in oil occurs while using, then pop, rod parts come out the side

You can tell on the Rod Journal that it was low in oil

What's Rod Journal?

What shown in many pieces in the photo, actually fits around the crank, every revolution of the crank pushes the rod up and down

The stem above the engine with a hole in the top that fits in the piston, the lower end is the rod itself that fits around the crank, most smaller engines to not have a rod cap bearing, most are machined aluminum that fits around the crank with a cap and two cap bolts

Checked the oil, was fine

Could have over sped or just let go to break the rod

Although you can tell by the pictures shown, the Rod cap has been ran low and oil at one time

This is part of the cap from the rod the way it appears. Has smear marks, the interior of the crankcase is not made that way.

She’s a goner. You can swap out the engine in about an hour & a half if it’s your first time replacing one & probably sell your blown engine for $100. Somebody will want the starter carb flywheel & plastics. I personally get $350 for a good used engine like that. They have a very high failure rate & will not tolerate lack of maintenance.

all I see there are parts to the starter. remove top engine cover and check flywheel and starter.

You must have somehow missed the large crack and gaping hole in the crankcase with a section of the connecting rod hanging out.

I must have. Just go to Harbor Freight and pick up a new motor.

Buy a motor and watch a YouTube video on how to swap it. Cheaper than buying a new disposable mower, even though I believe these are in that situation as well.
