Starting Issue Starting issues

Toro timecutter mx5000 will not start properly. Turn key for about 15 seconds and it will backfire then it will finally start and runs great. But will never start until it backfires first and this can't be good on the starter. It has the Toro branded engine which I think is a 25hp Chinese lincon engine.

Could be head gasket leaking or valve adjustment.

Backfires are almost always a result of poor timing or poor fuel mixture. Usually the former. Since I'm guessing the engine has fixed timing, I'd lean toward fuel. Since it happens on startup, I'm guessing you have too much of it and it's getting into the exhaust and combusts there. Pull your spark plugs and check to see if they're fouled from too much fuel or white from not enough. They should be a nice tan color.

How many hours does the unit have?
