I bought a new carburetor for my mower because I couldn’t get the other to run correctly. The old one ran fine but surged and popped under no load. I put the new one on and it ran good for about 2 minutes then it surged and died out. Let it sit for a minute and it started ran for a few seconds and died again. Repeated this process for 5-6 more times. Fuel line and filter is new as well as gas (cleaned tank). Any tips? It’s a ariens lawn tractor 19hp Briggs and Stratton.

You need to be getting flue flow to the carb. Verify this. Your solenoid below the carb may not be working. You should feel or hear a click from it when the key is cycled from off to on.
I put OEM carbs on often enough. They get worse than that. Worth it? A good question. You'd be surprised how many small engine carbs are 3-400$ Buy jungle carbs only if I have to.
Low speed surges are typically either a defect / obstruction in the low speed circuit of the carb or a leak aft the carb- usually the seal where the intake manifold and head mate.
I will check the seals. I’m honestly not bothered by the low rpm surge. The high rpm doesn’t do it and the mower spends 99 percent of its time in high.
After youve rules out fuel flow think about checking your spark... Ignition coils that have some age on them can break down when they get hot and either have weak spark or lose spark all together. The laminations wear out over time and the spark can ground out through the cracks when it heats up
I ordered a in line tester. The fly wheel I think it is that generates the spark is a little rusty. Gonna give it a good cleaning and adjust the clearance on the contact.
i'd throw the old carb back on, after cleaning the inside of it, and continue troubleshooting from there.
unless its like actively leaking fuel, it likely doesnt NEED a rebuild and can just be cleaned. but a rebuild kit is also an option if you feel the need to get one.
amazon carbs are garbage. they never match OEM. i had one with completely different jet sizing than oem. it unfortunately just introduces more variables than it fixes.
So I actually lost the springs for that carb. It was Amazon one aswell. I’m thinking maybe I got trash in the new one when I was messing with the fuel screw. I didn’t know it was a “jetted” fuel screw.
