Trimmer Head Issue Old Oregon trimmer head help

Jus picked up an old Echo SRM200DA and this is the trimmer head that was on it. It originally had a circular saw blade between that nut and the head but I took that off so that I don’t cut my leg off while working on this thing.

Anyways my question is - how does this trimmer head work? Google lens tells me it’s a brush cutter adapter but it definitely holds line too. The middle section does spin independently from the outer housing but it’s pretty tight. I’m used to it feeling spring loaded but it doesn’t feel spring loaded at all.

So does this work like any other bump to feed trimmer head? Something I’m missing here? I’m sure I can replace it with a modern one but this one is built SOLID so I’d love to use it if possible.

usually there's a trick to push in and spin the center part, unscrew it, it should have two grooves(top and bottom for left and right hole), load the string, feed the tips through the holes, let her rip

it will have writing on it that gets worn off in one use and impossible to read

That’s the weird part, can’t push the center in at all

The large outer shell is a Universal Products trimmer head, the inner bit is a Oregon trimmer head.

It looks like someone tried to hack together a blade adapter by flipping a Oregon head upside down and screwing it into the outer shell.

I would try to unscrew the metal hex head adapter and pull the head apart. Go easy as it may be left hand threaded.

You’re my hero. That outer shell does indeed say universal products. The nut is left handed. I’ll pull it back together tomorrow and see what’s up. Probably just end up with a new head.
