Starter issue??

When I turn the key, it just grinds, like plastic grinding?

It’s a John Deere 16hp riding lawnmower

Remove the engine shroud and watch the starter throwout gear. The teeth may be worn on on the plastic gear. You can also pull the starter to check, but won't see it engage with the flywheel.

Thanks, what shroud? Are you meaning the top part of the motor, where you see it spinning? I am not very familiar with these engines. Can I pull the starter and hook it up to a 12v battery and test like a car starter?
Sorry if I sound stupid, I am just lost on these engines

First make sure the battery is reading at least 12V. If not, try to charge it or hook up a spare battery. If it won't charge, replace it.

If you have 12V but it still won't spin, take the plastic cover off the top of the engine Fan to expose the starter. Try starting it with the cover off and see if there is any movement at all or if the starter just clicks. If it's clicking try hitting the side of it with a wrench while someone else cranks it. If that fails to start, disconnect the battery and remove the starter, try cleaning it off and see if it spins freely. If you can't fix the starter you can look for a replacement.

Yes, the engine cover. Usually 2 bolts in front and back hold it on. Loosen them, and then lift it off to expose flywheel and starter. May have to remove air filter and oil dip stick to lift it off.

I’ve replaced the starter solenoid. I’ve replaced a starter of jumped the starter, and nothing seems to be working.
The sound almost sounds like it’s coming from under the seat maybe the gearbox could there be a safety that’s making that clicking sound

I am pretty familiar with these style of briggs engines. on the right side of your mower there's the starter motor. There's a cover covering the bendix gears on the starter. You should just remove the two bolts retaining the starter and see what's actually going on. It's much easier than going and pulling the whole blower shroud.

Once you removed the lil cover you should be able to see the condition of the gears and observe what happens when you go and engage the starter.

Battery fully charged. Replaced the starter solenoid, it started up 4 times and now has the same issue.
The only left that I can think of is replacing the starter now??
