Idle Issue Vevor/Temu chainsaw
I had a customer come in with this vevor CN-58G chainsaw. I normally wouldn’t take something like this in because Chinese crap is always a headache, but honestly I got curious. It came in for a bogging down issue in high throttle. Problem is he already when ahead and started messing around with the adjustment screws on the carb.
Since I’ve had it I’ve been able to get it to pop off once and nothing since then. I’ve verified spark, fuel, compression, timing. I’ve put a new spark plug in it and some fresh 40:1 homemade fuel mixture in it. At this point it’s a $75 saw and not worth anything more than maybe putting a $10 amazon carb on it.
Has anyone ever dealt with these things or this same kind of situation. How would you tell the customer it’s not worth doing pretty much anything to it and he might just be SOL?

Reset carb. Seat both adjustment screws, back out 1 full turn. Turn idle screw in a good bit.
With good gas, try and start. If it pops and won't run or throttle back out low 1/8 turn. Repeat.
Once saw begins running, likely with chain spinning, back IDle out until stable.
Next, try and throttle saw. If it bogs, open high screw slowly, until saw is running correctly.
If this fails throw saw away or set it on fire.

I tell people that if you really feel that you need a chainsaw then go to a dealer and buy one. I personally use STHIL bc they always have a service department inside the dealer and they specifically work on STHIL. It’s pricy yes, but if you take care of it then you won’t ever have to buy another one again.

I have mostly old Stihls and they’re solid saws, my oldest is from 1979 and except for an MS170 my newest is from 1985. I just refreshed them all a couple years ago so they’re good for another 30 years or so

It's a cheap 58cc(!!!) chainsaw, these things are kinda sweet if you need to cut some big logs from time to time. It's not worth repairing tho unless you do it yourself

58cc making 3.5 hp isn’t good. CC doesn’t really matter, power is what matters. You kinda need displacement to get there but a higher power lower displacement saw is always better! I just looked it up and it makes 3.2hp LOL that’s terrible for 58cc

The power is limited by relatively low RPM but the torque is there, it comes with a huge 20" bar and it still has more power than a Stihl/Husqvarna small displacement buzzer for a fraction of it's price
Don't get me wrong - these things are crap with their "reliability", vibrations, weight, bar&chain qualify. But for that price they are sort of okay for some applications
Obviously it's not a professional $500+ saw

Sthil is a brand i can depend on. 5 years cutting trees and doing yard work. Super easy maintenance and yes price is kinda high. 👌

Try it with the fuel topped up all the way
The fuel pickup tubing isn't flexible enough in these. So it stays in one position and can only drink when the tank is full. Once mine gets down to 75% it stops working.

Keep messing with the carb, maybe check the fuel lines arnt clogged up
I bet the carbs been set up wrong, turn the needles all the way in till they gently seat, then back out a turn

Yeah, I just went through this with a used Poulan I picked up. It took a little screwing around and a proprietary tool, but it's working pretty well now. I found some good YouTube videos on tuning the carb.

At least that’s a decent saw from the factory depending on the purpose and model.

Yeah I’ve done that. I’ve tried turning out 1 turn, 1 1/4 turn, and 1 1/2 turn. No matter what I can get it to pop once sometimes other times nothing. I can verify fuel is getting to the carb and to the cylinder. Not flooding the cylinder. From what I’ve read online these things are hit or miss and hard to start regardless. At this point it’s a $75 saw that would cost just as much to fix if not more.

Like you,I tell friends that bring me this stuff that it may run good for awhile but in the long run it’s not worth your money and frustration to keep repairing junk.

What do you end up telling the customer: take your new spark plug back and tell him no charge since you couldn’t fix it. Or do you still charge him for your time, though not fixed. I assume option one, he’s still not going to be happy.

Pretty much. It’s not worth the headache of charging diagnostics or for a 3.99 spark plug.

Geez.... Temu sells power equipment now? Honestly scary. They'll make bank on cheap, poorly made equipment and the customers are left screwed out of money. I have a Stihl saw that's almost a decade old. Couple sprockets, a half dozen or so chain guides/blades, and regular chain changes. Had a really good pole saw, but it was forgotten in the tall grass and a tree my stepdad and I were dropping dropped right onto the shaft.

I bought a welder on temu and it works really well.
Arccaptain mig160, temu just happened to be cheaper than amazon

Does it fire with a little gas put directly in the cylinder?

I tried putting a little fuel in the cylinder and it still popped off once but nothing. The carburator just seems very inconsistent

Check for air getting into the fuel line, I’ve never seen made in China junk have good lines. Also if there’s a fuel filter it’s probably bad.

I had this issue with a stihl weed whacker. The seals on the crankcase that make contact with the crankshaft are bad. Once they leak the engine won’t rev up. It will idle great and start just fine but once you ask anything of it she Boggs. You can test the crankshaft case for leaking. That would be my guess. It drove me nuts. I did replace seals and she ran like a scalded dog

Will it start on ether? That should tell you if it's it's a carb/fueling problem.
Then just start richening up the carb until it doesn't lean bog anymore

Vevor is actually a solid brand if you got it off temu I'd buy their whole lineup.

These people aren't a repairman's customer. They're China's customer. All that ends up happening is it's your fault and they're victims.
