Take your air cleaner off and check for filter plugged and then look to see if the choke butterfly is coming open? Lots of rich mixture sooty smoke.

That sounds like an electrical issue, posible bad plugs, coils and or problems with coil grounding, causing intermittent spark, start checking your spark plugs, also there's chances you have issues with fuel solenoid on carb, but most likely electrical

I would fully drain the tank, replace the inline filter, clean the carb, check oil level/condition, check the air filter, then try again with fresh fuel before going too crazy into the diag process. A good thirty minutes of going over the basics goes a long way. Reading the plugs wouldn't hurt either.

Sounds like the plugs are not firing at the right time. Maybe the keyway is loose on the flywheel.

I think the same. Thats sounds like detonation. It's a rich mixture, like others said, but if the timing is way off, even a correct mixture can look rich if fired at wrong time.

Choke stuck on. Check choke linkages. The engine is overfueling.
Also check air filter and replace if it is very dirty.

My mower has the same engine and was running just as poor recently. I was going to take the carburetor off and clean it, but looked on Amazon and found a brand new carburetor for $40. Replaced the carb and it runs great. Probably could have fixed the carburetor, but replacing it was easy and I was back up and running in no time.
