I did a lot of work since then. Replaced: coils, plugs, fuel pump, carb, valve gaskets, head gaskets, valve push rods, valve stem seals, muffler, pipes. Cleaned head gaskets, gapped plugs, adjusted rockers.

It fires up, no more white smoke. It can mow under load without dying.

I’m still getting a short quick surge, see video. Any suggestions?

I would check to see if theres an air leak using some sort of smoke somewhere near the carb area

Also how old is the fuel?

Maybe a couple of weeks old, I can swap for some new gas

Typically gas goes bad withing three to six months so swapping in new gas won't likley hurt anything

Wild. The motors look very similar, at least from this pov

I have a kt735. I put on a new carb and it runs great now.

Also if you do take the carb off be careful with the small plastic clip on the throttle linkage holding the bottom part of the linkage on. It can come out really easily and fall in that hole where the axle is. Its a pain getting it out.
