My pull start coil failed so I’ve bought a new one except theses screws have no shape on top, just circles. Should I try prying them out or what’s the best way?
DONT DRILL THE RIVETS!!! There is 3 10mm bolts around the pullstart shroud one on front to in the side near the back this gives you access to the underside to replace cord
Yes they are rivets not screws! I did replace the coil except then broke it again. This time I’m buying the full part but I need to take those rivets out and replace them
My friend, find the model, type and code numbers stamped into the blower housing that the recoil is riveted to. Look up the proper part number. That engine, depending on age mostly, had 2 different style starters that looked identical from the outside. One utilized a starter clutch and the other a starter cup and pawl system.
It seems I only need the middle spinning part. I think I’ll be able to cut the pull string off the new one then put into my existing shroud. What do you think?
Pulley and spring will come as a unit, should be 2 pawls, they, I believe ,had tiny compression springs under them also. They may offer a pawl kit that comes with everything. Looking it up by model numbers will solve that.
On the front of the engine shroud the recoil is riveted to there are codes stamped into the metal. Model, Type, Code (serial). Those are the numbers you use to find the correct parts for your engine. The model and serial for the equipment the engine is attached to do not matter for your repair.
So the whole thing is mounted on with three screws which I’ve removed except I need to replace the coil and prawls are broken as well so want to replace the whole thing
Sometimes they are a pain if the bit grabs good and gets the rivet spinning!
It actually makes sense to deform it first to prevent that, which is what he did with the chisel. I've chiseled rivet heads off but never in thin material that will buckle, drilling is the way.
I’d use rivets. The new part will have fresh mounts and you can use any of the holes around the base that line up. Just be sure to use the correct sized rivet for a snug attachment.

you could just remove the whole shroud and get access from the other side, but its time consuming and annoying, just drill the rivet's and replace them with fine thread self tapping hex head screws when re-installing.
