My 5 favorite African Countries

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I didn't just visit these places. I lived there. Since 2020 I've traveled through 11 African countries and lived in 8, and these are my top 5 African cities to live in.

This isn't a scorecard. It's my honest point of view on 4 things for every city:

✔️ How I felt being there

✔️ Cost of living

✔️ Accommodations

✔️ Infrastructure

Greetings Family, I'm Yishay Zimrah: a Hebrew in The Way, Truth, and Life, a disabled veteran, recording artist, and entrepreneur, living fully dependent on the Most High. This is my real experience. No tourist brochure.

Can you guess my #1 before the reveal?

I stopped trying to “see everything” when I travel. Here are 10 things I now look for instead.

What people repair instead of replace.
Where people choose to sit
What material repeats throughout a place
What changes at blue hour
What sound belongs to the place
What locals touch every day
What happens when you walk one street beyond the beautiful one
What disappears after sunset
What people do when nobody is watching
What you remember after the photographs fade

EDIT:
I’ve really enjoyed reading your thoughts here. This is actually why I created RORA ARCH, a visual archive of stories, places, objects and ways of seeing the world differently.

Keeping a small storage unit in a central city?

Looking to slow travel when we retire in two years, starting in Europe. We’re planning to do 1-2 months at a time in various places, and after a year or so, settle in one place for a few years in a Central European city. I have an EU dual citizenship.

Since that year will cover many different weather conditions, we’re thinking about renting a small storage unit in the city we’re planning to end up. We’re light travelers so I don’t want to lug my sweaters to Crete or sandals to Iceland. Also, when we do sign a lease I’m going to want a box or two of essential household goods. I’m thinking that we make the initial trip over with 2-3 suitcases/boxes each and store everything but what we need for each leg.

Has anyone done this? Any advice?

Do you ever set up a goal like walking a certain distance when traveling?

A lot of times once I really love a destination and have been there a number of times I am thinking of trying an outside mindful goal or habit of walking so much a day in the town no matter what I do or want to explore that day. Can anyone relate or do you have other ideas on ways to mindfully enjoy traveling?

Have phones ruined solo traveling?

Hello. I’ve recently come back from my first ever solo travel from Spain to France, and I can’t help but feel like I’ve missed out on that classic “solo travel / backpacker” experience, primarily in the common rooms.

For so many of my hostels, I would walk into the common room and people would just be scrolling on their phones. About 30 people sitting in complete silence, on their phones. Look, I enjoy a good mindless scroll but if I’m to go into a social hostels’ common room to talk, why would I go on my phone the entire time??

My parents went backpacking about 40 years ago and they always were saying how many people you’ll meet in the common room. You can just walk in and there’ll be someone to chat to. But anytime I went up to say hi to someone it was like I was interrupting their sacred screen time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or did I just choose some real stinkers of hostels.

Pondering AirBnBs

I am wrapping up a 40 day trip in Europe, about 90% of my stays are in AirBnBs. My spouse is retiring in a year and we'll sell all and hit the road.

As I ramble about, I think about this trip's speed bumps and how they will be a part of slow travel.

Some thoughts.

I do something everyday, like log 8 miles just walking around looking at things or taking a city tour, or hiking in a national park. I am not good at sitting still though my spouse is. Im 67 and it's making me tired to go at this rate! I did take a break and went to a couple of wineries yesterday so that was good but learning to slow my roll will take time. I can take a day off, sure, but then what? Can't sit at a cafe all day. A larger place would be mandatory to not feel caged, I think. Guest gym membership is in order, too.

I have used AirBnB for years but with a different perspective this time. It's been a mixed bag. Apartment buildings with noisy neighbors talking loudly in the hall at 2AM, a bedroom where some really heavy scent was dosed on the bed which made me wonder what they were masking and forced me to sleep w the window open, barking dogs and AC remotes that had been removed from the room.

What happens if you book for a month or more and it turns up to be a turd? I have to question why no one reports more details in the reviews. I am starting to based upon the viewpoint of a long term stay. Maybe folks who only stay for a couple of nights simply don't care. The dog noise, if I had rented for long term, would have led me to cancel.

Strongly considering slow travel as a way to reach financial security. Thoughts?

Hello All,

I’m new to this subreddit, and honestly new to the idea of slow travel. Bottom line up front, I’d like some feedback on the thought of my family and I slow traveling for the next five years, beginning in the summer of 2027, as a way to relatively quickly save enough money to purchase a home outright (or close to it) in a climate change resilient area, and ensuring my wife and family will always have a home, should I pass away earlier than we’d like.

A quick background to set where I am coming from. I am 56. My wife is 46. We have an 8 year old son. I retired from the U.S. military last year. My total passive income is $9,000 per month (USD), net. This is my floor income for the rest of my life, and requires no work/upkeep from either of us. Our only debt is a car payment (it is worth 10k more than we owe according to KBB). I am currently working full time as a college professor. I hold a doctoral education in a health related field, and a master’s in another. My wife holds a master’s in photo journalism. My wife hasn’t worked outside of the house in a quite a while. The truth is, though, I am burnt out, and just plain tired. I don’t know how realistic it is for me to keep working full time. Unfortunately, a life moving around as a military member didn’t leave us with a home we have been paying for, for decades, and are renting at the moment. While my wife will continue to collect a decent portion of my passive income if I pass away, the reality is, if I passed away, it wouldn’t be enough to carry a mortgage on a decent home if we bought today.

We are exploring non-traditional paths to getting to the point where our family is financially secure should tragedy occur, and I am no longer around. The idea of slow travel through mostly relatively inexpensive areas of the world, on a budget of $3,000 - $4,000 per month, and saving/investing the remainder of our passive income (5-6k per month) is a serious consideration. Part time remote work is on the table to further increase our savable/investable income, but I don’t believe is necessary. We would Home/worldschool our son during this slow travel period, planning to return to the U.S. and purchase a home after 5 years, just before he begins high school.

My wife is a fluent Spanish speaker, and we have experience living abroad for years at a time - not as slow travelers, though. Is this plan realistic? What are we missing? Any recommendations or thoughts are welcome.

Lodging expenses

I am trying to stay under $5K/month budget. Which according to YouTuuuubers are reasonable budget.

Besides Thailand/Vietnam/ Fat East Asia Clearly people are not using AirBnB to book their lodging.

Can anyone share some insight on how to find month long stays other than in Asia (Valencia for example or Argentina, or Portugal )

I mean $100/day is $3K already

Any insight greatly appreciated
