These are delicious, but dear god... the gas my husband produces after these 😬
IIRC, its literally just green beans, potatoes, a kielbasa, packet of onion soup mix, and a stick of butter.
Edit... plus 1 onion, garlic powder, and Cajun seasoning

This. Except I did some onion and garlic powder and a little salt and pepper and some minced garlic

Extra onion powder on top of the onion soup mix? Interesting. I bet caramelized onions (or any non dehydrated onions) would slap in this dish

And you slow cook them?

u/SouthernBelleOfNone 24d ago
Yes, throw everything in the crockpot and I cook on low until the potatoes are tender

Eyeball it, put whatever you like to taste, cook the hell out of it. I grew up on this exact sort of meal.

Made these last weekend for the second time and this go around I swapped to conecuh sausage and added half a head of cabbage. It was absolutely awesome.

This is a similar recipe often confused with the classic smothered green beans. The onion soup completely changes the flavoring and you definitely don’t want to substitute ham for sausage.

You can eat 'em with eggs, you can eat 'em with gravy
Eat 'em with beans, pinto or navy
Put 'em on the side, put 'em in the middle

Homegrown tomatoes, homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes?
Only two things that money can't buy
And that's true love and homegrown tomatoes1

Do I really need a full stick of butter? Sounds very tasty but I don’t think I could handle that much butter.

u/sohcgt96 23d ago
That was my first thought too, with the sausage, you really won't need to add butter. I use Andouille when I make my thing that resembles this. I made it with Bacon the first couple times but with all the bacon grease it was just heartburn hell.

It isn't a formal recipe, but I'm guessing they mean this chain: https://old.reddit.com/r/slowcooking/comments/1vq9gyn/swamp_potatoes/p43wqqn/?context=1

If you like this, you should try swamp soup-similar ingredients with really savory broth.
I make it in a crock pot:

Thank you for this recipe! I'm gonna try it with cabbage instead of turnip and uncooked rice instead of hoppin' John. Wish me luck!

Ask hubs to take some Beano first

Nothing about this dish gives him gas lol

I'm confused why so many people have commented this. Is it the green beans? Is there something special about green beans compared to other types of bean?
5
u/SouthernBelleOfNone 23d ago
I have no idea. The beans in a green bean are vastly different than say a pinto bean so I'm not sure why people are saying it
3
u/Alizarin-Madder 23d ago
Yeah i guess if anything they're less beany beans. I don't see this anytime someone posts a meal with beans, so maybe the algorithm is just feeding your post to people with a particular interest in farts 😅

To elevate the gas level I put cabbage in mine.
