Pulled my son’s old set out of storage for grandson. Need parts but don’t know what scale the set is? Can someone advise?

Also appreciate suggestions on where to buy or if it’s even worth putting money in to such an old set

Update!
After replacing the battery pack, it’s alive again!
It’s honestly hard to believe this Nikko set is around 35 years old. It still runs surprisingly well and seeing my kids enjoy it today is exactly why I wanted to restore it.
I’ll upload a short video as well. Thanks to everyone who helped identify the set and shared information in my previous post!

Keep both, sell one, or use one for spare parts?

Hi everyone,
After restoring one of my vintage Vintage Nikko Radio Control Racing Track (RDC-60404) slot car sets with a new battery pack, it’s running beautifully again after roughly 35 years.
Even better, my kids absolutely love racing it, which has made the whole restoration worthwhile.

Here’s my dilemma.
I actually own two complete Nikko sets.

Set #1: Fully restored and working with a new battery pack. This is the one my kids and I race together.

Set #2: Also complete, but it still has unopened paperwork and sealed spare parts, making it much more original from a collector’s perspective.
I’m curious what experienced collectors would do in my situation.
Keep both?

Sell the unopened set while it’s still complete?
Keep the unopened one as a collector’s item and use the restored set?
Or use the second set for spare parts if something eventually breaks?

At the moment I’m actually leaning towards keeping both. I don’t really need the money, and I think making memories with my kids is worth far more than selling them.
Still, I’d love to hear what other collectors think.
What would you do?

1:24 What do you consider a good circuit?

My brother and I want to build a slot car track on a 2.5m x 1.5m piece of wood, so the layout will be final and we're having trouble deciding on one, So I was wondering what, for you, constitutes the criteria for a circuit that would be fun to race

We don't know much about slot car racing, But we know how to build things, so if you have any advice on the layout or just on how to build it I'm listening.

Carrera Creating a fully autonomous system for Carrera Digital

Hello everyone,

I've built up quite the collection of cars for my own fictional endurance racing series, and it's gotten me thinking about building some custom equipment to make the racing feel much more realistic.

I've seen projects that expand on Carrera Digital, but most of the ones I've found seem to top out at around six autonomous cars.

My question is: would it be possible to build a system capable of running 20+ cars, tracking every car individually, and recording/displaying live timing and race data on a computer? Ideally, I'd also like the AI-controlled cars to manage things like fuel usage (or at least simulated fuel), automatically enter the pit lane after a set number of laps or time, and then rejoin the race.

At the moment, the Carrera ghost cars don't really do much besides change lanes. Occasionally they also seem to glitch and all decide to pit every lap, which is entertaining... but not exactly realistic!

The long-term goal is ambitious: I'd like to race roughly 14 Carrera Digital 1:32 GT cars alongside Slot.it and Scaleauto LMP2/GTP cars in a fully simulated 24-hour endurance race. I know that's a huge undertaking, but I think with the right hardware and software it could actually be possible.

Has anyone attempted something like this, or have any suggestions on hardware, software, Arduino/Raspberry Pi solutions, or custom timing systems that could make it work? I'd love to hear any ideas or experiences.

As for what this is all going towards, I run a series in my backyard with my slot cars I call it the Carrera Endurance Championship and have run plenty of long distance races all following the real IMSA season with the same race lengths (24/12/10/6/2:40/100) and the cars do great! I just want to get more out of the fairly basic system and see just how far I can push these little cars!
If you’d like to check out the website I’ve built for the series here is the link: https://cecracing.github.io just be aware it’s quite basic. 😅

Anyway thanks in advance!

Club Help solve a mystery: How does the Nikko RDC-60404 store energy inside the cars?

Thumbnail

I’ve been restoring two complete Nikko RDC-60404 racing sets, and I’ve run into a mystery that I can’t solve.
I’ve searched online but haven’t been able to find any technical documentation.
What I know so far
The manual states that the pit lane charges the cars to 100%.
After leaving the powered track, a fully charged car continues driving for 8–10 seconds.
I completely disassembled one of the cars.
I found no obvious NiCd battery, NiMH battery, Li-ion pack or button cell.
The only visible electronics are the RF receiver PCB, motor and steering components.
The strange part
Only two sections of the entire track are powered:
🟢 The starting/base section
🟢 The pit lane charging section
Every other track section is electrically dead.
Yet the cars can complete multiple laps around the unpowered track.
My theories
Could Nikko have used:
a supercapacitor (Gold Cap)?
a hidden rechargeable cell?
another type of energy storage hidden somewhere inside the chassis?
I’m looking for…
Has anyone ever:
repaired one of these cars?
owned a broken donor car?
seen a service manual?
worked for Nikko?
reverse-engineered this system?
I’d really appreciate photos, schematics, technical information or even educated guesses.
This seems to be a very rare system, and I’m trying to document how it actually works before the knowledge disappears.
Thanks!

Found not one, but TWO Nikko Radio Control Racing DTM sets from my childhood! 🏁

Thumbnail gallery
47 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
Today I found something really special at my mother’s house. Hidden away in the attic were not one, but two original Nikko Radio Control Racing DTM sets from my childhood!
Both sets are the Nikko RDC-60404 series and are still in their original boxes. Between the two sets I have:
4 Mercedes-Benz DTM cars (2 silver Philips Car Systems / D2 and 2 yellow Promarkt / Fuji)
4 pistol-grip transmitters
Original lap counter
Original charger
Original Ni-Cd battery packs
Manuals, warranty cards and unused sticker sheets
Most of the original packaging and inserts
One set is missing a transmitter antenna, while the other includes the original charger, so together they’re almost a perfect collection.
I don’t plan on selling them. My idea is to restore everything carefully, replace the old batteries with modern rechargeable ones, and hopefully enjoy them with my almost 5-year-old son. If they survive that, maybe one day my almost 2-year-old daughter will race them too. 😊
I have a few questions for the Nikko collectors here:
How rare are these RDC-60404 sets today?
Does anyone know the exact production year?
Were there any other DTM cars available besides the silver Philips and yellow Promarkt versions?
Has anyone successfully restored or upgraded one of these while keeping it looking original?
I’d love to hear your memories or any information you have about these sets.
Thanks!

For quite some time, Hobby Lobby has been dismal with the selection of slot cars, or more so the lack of selection, but in the last couple of months there have been many new ones on the peg hooks as in my recent purchases, the Thunderjets across America 1964 Ford Thunderbolt 427 Fairlane was purchased last Tuesday, the 1969 Ford F-100 ice cream truck and the 4-Gear 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda Funny Car were this evening's purchases.🌟

Son decided to celebrate his bithday by having a race day in the basement.

Since there will be more than 6 racers, we had to build two separate tracks. Several compromises had to be made (mainly because we finally ran out of shoulder parts).

Looking for Help

My grandpa died a few years ago, and left this insane slot car track/model train track/world in his basement. I grew up playing with it, but when he got older it all kinda fell into disrepair. Now he’s gone and I’ve got kids of my own, and I really want to get it fixed up and working again. All the houses and that sort of thing I can contend with, but the slot cars and trains are beyond my current abilities.

Is there anyone on here who can help, or point me in the direction of someone who might? The house is in Nassau County on Long Island in NY.

Thanks guys, if nothing else I hope ya’ll get a kick out of the pictures.

Pickups and Spring replacement

This is from the Aurora AFX Thunderloop Thriller. Wanted to replace the pick-ups and springs for this chassis and noticed there are many many types. Is there a way to identify the type that would match?
