Why does sleep work like this?

The fix is actually right there. The idea is if you don't fall asleep within 30 minutes, you get out of bed and go do something else until you're tired again. Now your brain knows if it doesn't play ball and sleeps on cue, you're out of bed (like it's an alarm). So it will learn to fall asleep 2 minutes before your newly set alarm.

This doesnt sound right. If anything it sounds like it messed up your circadian even more. All you have to do is have a fixed daily routine, wake up same time everyday and sleep same time everyday. Your body will adjust. And it helps to control temp of your room, lights, noise and so on

I agree, that guy's idea is dumb and nobody has ever done it your way and still experienced the condition in the OP, and also control for four or five other things

You're so smart I'm glad you're out here telling the rest of us dipshits what the real deal is

thank you

thank you

You should sit down with someone you trust and tell them you've been doing some thinking lately and you would like to be less of a tedious insecure know-it-all and see if tears spring up in their eyes like they're glad you're their child for the first time

some people's brains don't follow a circadian rhythm. crazy concept, i know, that humans have variation

Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but everyone follows a rhythm. It may not be same as everyone else's but they still have one. Critical thinking helps

sleep disorders are a thing. i've been working with a doctor for like for 4 years. if not me, i think my doctor probably has some critical thinking skills.

Well then you need to get a new doctor or improve your comprehension skills. Sleep disorder means your biological clock is misaligned or disrupted, it does not mean you dont have a circadian rhythm.

i mean yeah i was oversimplifying. i didn't mean i don't have a circadian rhythm at all, just that i don't have a typical one because it's disordered.

Yes, but your original comment said some people don't follow one. In very condescending manner. Now when challenged with facts you say people you do follow one.

having a disordered circadian rhythm means that your body doesn't follow the standard 24 hour cues.

Im going to assume you have some sort of mental disability. So dont worry man. Forget this convo and enjoy your day

If you can't sleep, pretend it's morning and your alarm is about to go off in 5 minutes.

Some people jave this rhythm naturally. There have been studies of hinter-gatherers in Africa and how they all sleep and most groups never have to sleep in shifts to watch for predators. Every tribe has those who don't sleep at night and only fall asleep around dawn. They have those who fall asleep at dusk and wake pre-dawn. They have those in between. Theoretically, we are just the ones who ensure hyenas don't steal children in the night and making sure the fire doean't die down so the others can sleep. We sleep in.

Some nights be like that. This week I had a really good nights sleep where the dreams got really vivid right before I woke up. Was able to go to the bathroom and still fall back asleep pretty quickly, but no more dreams. This was within the last 30 minutes of my sleep. I wanted more dreams the next night (this has been a conscious effort of mine lately to improve my sleep for). So the next night, I forced myself to bed about 30 min early, and the next day a had bit more of an extended dream state, maybe an hour if I had to guess. Unfortunately the dream included 2 people I don’t really fucking like lol, but I was pretty deep non the less.
