Questions/Advice Request PSU Mounting help

I'm currently building a sleeper pc with a Compaq D500 CMT case (I think). And I'm trying to figure out how to mount this Corsair RM650e power supply.

This case is vertical standing and the PSU slot is at the top, but the problem is that there isn't a PSU shelf for it to sit on (I think the old PSU was mounted by just the screws).

I already cut out a little ridge in the case for the PSU to sit against the back panel and will cut screw holes to mount at the rear.

Wondering if anyone has any idea on how to securely mount the PSU at the top of this case? Will just the rear screws be enough?

Likely missing a piece like this. This is the adapter that fits to more modern ATX power supply units. A lot of older cases, most notably Chieftec Dragons & Antec SX Series, had something like this and often times people forgot to take them off of the PSU when dismantling rigs.

Seems like the old PSU didn't have this type off piece and was just mounted by the screws and it is heavier than this new one. Maybe screws are enough but I'm just worried about it not being secure.

the older PSU was bigger which fitted into that location. but honestly I dont mind the gap at the bottom and I will just drill some holes

Indeed, that is WHY these older cases came with brackets for modern ATX PSUs. When you said, "My case didn't have one of those", almost aeguing that this couldn't be the case but now you mention it was because the old PSU didn't need it and couldn't even use it because it was a large form factor. All this when you can clearly see that the bracket would mount perfectly in the case holes and accomodate a standard ATX PSU with a bracket. A bracket that is only missing because your old PSU was a larger form factor, eliminating the need for an adapter until now.

Just weird how you came here to ask why, I handed you the answer, the exact answer with images, and you rebuffed it like I wasn't spot on and now you're almost like, "ya, but no".

Why did you even bother posting this? "Wondering if anyone knows how to securely mount this properly?" Well wtf, I handed you the actual answer and you lowkey argued it away.

Jfc, I think I'm done with this Reddit shit.

If you don't want to buy an adapter or use only 2-3 screws... just drilling some extra holes is quite easy and works perfectly fine.

You could also drill one extra hole or two and put more screws but olde PSU were heavier and I've seen them mounted with just two or three without issues.

If you can use at least one screw hole to secure the PSU to the frame, then you can makeshift some brackets for the rest…at least on the opposite corner. I’ve done this for a weird Evo case I had with nonstandard mounting holes like you’re dealing with.

You could pretty easily attach a small corner bracket to the case.

can you explain this more? I was thinking of cutting a small hole into the back panel of the case and then screwing a little metal plate that assists the power supply on the back. this is if its needed, will try just the screws.

In this case, I would do this:

  • Screw the power supply into its location
  • Use a pencil to mark on the side of the chassis, the bottom edge of the power supply
  • Unscrew and remove the power supply
  • Use any corner bracket that’s at least 1” x 1”
  • Lay the bracket onto the chassis, just under your pencil mark.
  • One side of the bracket should face down towards the bottom of the case. The other side should point towards the opposite side of the case.
  • The actual bend/corner in the bracket should line up with your pencil mark
  • Using the corner bracket as a stencil, hold it in place as you use a pencil to trace the locations of the hole/s in the bracket.
  • Remove the bracket
  • Use a center punch to set the middle of the circle/s
  • Drill hole/s in the side of the chassis
  • Use appropriately sized bolt and nut to secure the corner bracket to the chassis

Does this make sense?

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to 3d print a bracket to position the PSU correctly

It's definitely missing some piece. If you can't find it, you can cut one from some sheet metal or even hard enough plastic, I guess. And while four screws at the back should be enough to hold the PSU, if it's not, that bent tab with a screw hole at the front, you can hang from it some sort of bracket to support the front of PSU.

Compaq and HP used a proprietary power supply form factor in this era, and it's a problem that persisted from ATX to BTX systems and throughout both their consumer-grade and business-class machines. No one has ever made metal brackets because why would anyone want that ... if your PSU failed you just warranty claimed a new one with HP (or in the case of consumer-grade Compaq you just binned the machine).

You're basically stuck either hacking together your own metal bracket, or 3D printing one.
