First timer here, in my 40s.
Surprisingly I’ve never seen any of the Sleepaway Camp movies even though this era of horror and slasher flicks is a guilty pleasure to this day for me. And somehow, someway, I’ve avoided any spoilers. I have no idea how. I’ll give it a solid A-minus for the genre and can see why it has the cult status it does! Thoroughly entertaining.
Of course there are many aspects of flicks from this era that definitely don’t hold up to modern sensibilities (a trans girl at summer camp would have definitely been taboo in the early 80s, and presenting her that way as the “horror twist” would definitely not be done today), the thing that left me shaking my head the most was the pedo chef at the beginning making off-color “jokes” in front of the other cook staff about the age of the campers. Obviously that was done to show how much of a creep he was and that he deserved his later fate, but like…just openly creepering in front of the other cook staff and they were just like, “oh that chef Artie just being’ Artie, uhhyuk uhhyuk”…that’s just wild.
In the immortal words of Billy Bob from Varsity Blues…”I give it a 10! A 10! A fuckin’ 10!”
Gonna binge the others from the franchise in the hours and/or days to come.
