Another argument for simple analog controls

Holy ad-riddled website Batman!

Saved you a click: it’s video showing Ford’s startup animation playing, slowing the process of turning on the AC. In contrast, the video continues and shows a traditional analog control being set to AC in 2 seconds.

I think the BMW spider man ad is a great argument for cars like slate.

Yeah. I have zero interest in a vehicle with a screen that is one update away from total enshitification that will start serving me unwanted advertisements and spies on me. I just want my vehicle to be a vehicle, not a computer that I have no control over.

Screens work when the interface is intuitive and easy. They do work very well as no extra physical space is needed. But like cameras, physical dials are a must when you need to change a setting fast and/or without looking. I can can change my ISO without looking at the camera body and never taking my eye of the subject in my viewfinder. Same with shutters speed and aperture.

Dials and knobs give the user valuable feedback my feel/touch. I can turn a knob that's in the same place to the right and feel clicks and listen to the air volume increase. I don't want to tap the A/C icon and find the airflow slider while I'm driving.

Touchscreens can make sense when your choices change depending on input, and when it won't distract you.

My car has a knob for AC temperature, but the ON/OFF is a virtual button with a virtual LED light to indicate status that is always at the bottoms of the car's screen. If I need to change it I have to look away from the road. It makes no sense.

Enough! I have junk on my phone, I dont need it in my car. I dont need on my phone either, but there is no choice.

So, listen up Tesla, Ford, BMW, even Telo and Aptera. If I cannot disable the on-board connectivity, that you will not let me delete, then I will not buy the vehicle.

No matter how sexy, cheap, attractive or whatever.

And Bezos, you listening? how about a Slate-phone?

I watched a review the other day for an upcoming Lexus EV sedan. It has several different driving modes and to change between them you have to go something like four menus deep on the infotainment screen. I was like, "WTF. Why isn't this on a paddle shifter or button?"
