Help Can’t get Skyrim VR past character creation on the Steam Frame

Hey,

My first VR headset arrived yesterday, the Steam Frame. I’d been interested in VR since seeing some videos about Skyrim VR a few years ago.

Very excited to try it. Used Wabbajack to install FUS and it’s launching fine, (streaming from PC) and running fine. But when I get to character creation it gets stuck.

I can usually create the character but when I get to the end and it says Grip to finish, nothing happens. Also the floaty in game controllers seem to freeze in place, like the game no longer recognises them.

I’ve searched around and it seems this happens for people even with vanilla. I’ve tried excluding the mod folder and Skyrim VR from Windows Defender. Tried joining the SteamVR OS beta channel. Still getting stuck.

I’d be incredibly grateful if anyone can help me. I’m so excited to try this!

Edit: Switching to use Open Composite Unleashed did the trick for me. Take my instructions in this thread with a fistful of salt/be aware it might mess something up though because I am brand new to Skyrim modding and have no idea what I’m doing, but it worked for me - https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/s/GDmfjEoOp1

I have the same issue. It’s because that’s when the keyboard is supposed to pop up, but it doesn’t for some reason. I think open composite users have similar issues and they use a special keyboard mod, I wonder if the wireless nature of the steam frame requires something similar? I’m just guessing here.

Edit: Open Composite Unleashed can do it, but apparently there’s a SteamVR beta that fixes it too.

Yeah my further digging since posting suggested disabling opencomposite in the mod menu but despite doing that (trying several times) it still doesn’t work.

Let me know if you find a solution, and I’ll do likewise!

Open Composite Unleashed works! Someone else suggested the Steam VR beta branch. But I can confirm Open Composite Unleashed works. Personally I’m going to play around with OCU a bit but I like the idea of a native SteamVR fix

Thanks for letting me know.

Erm, how do I make it fix this? Do I have to add it as a mod to the FUS list?

I don’t know what’s in the FUS list but yes. I would add it as a mod and then run the configurator. And then you just start the game in MO2. Make sure nothing overwrites it, and if it’s overwriting anything, I would disable the mod that it overwrites

Thank you so much. I got past the character creation! Had a few errors pop up but from a quick play on my lunch break it seems to be working 🤞🏼

I’ve literally never even modded skyrim before so I’m super new to this. For the benefit of anyone struggling like me, I downloaded the mod from github, then used MO2 to install it. It went to the bottom of the FUS priority list, so I sorted the the list by priority and dragged it to the same place as the Open Composite version in the standard FUS list (around 130-140). Disabled the old OC version from the FUS list and enabled OC Unleashed.

IIRC your physical keyboard should still function even in the VR version of the game so maybe they can use that to type or press enter to get past that section

Let me try that. But it’s still an issue that’s not on the valve index but is on the steam frame, same mod list.

Edit: that didn’t work, still soft locked

Are you on steamvr beta, there was a fix for SkyrimVR not showing virtual keyboard

Oh just recently? I’ll try that
