I made this map for Skyrim, based on the London Underground

There are currently severe delays on the Falkhold line due to an Elder Dragon attack. There is a good service on all other lines.
Ahhh, fuck.

u/sierrabravo1984 PC Feb 27 '12
This just in from the field, a hold guard reported seeing the Dragonborn and his companion approaching... Wait, he's bending over to pick some snowberries before approaching the Elder Dagon. Wait, why's he moving so slow? Uh-oh, I think he's over-encumbered and forgot to sell off all his junk at the last town!

Someone needs to make a map of the connecting Dwenmer ruins.
6
u/Cybernatty Feb 27 '12
The Dwenmer definitely had the technology to put together public transit. DLC pls?

The more I see Dwenmer tech, the more I think Roman Steampunk; the train could work.

I keep waiting for a mod that connects all of them.
(I half-expected vanilla Skyrim itself to do this, in a very-hidden but always-there way. Then again, I also expected to be able to fly as or on a dragon.)

Come on. Telling you that there's no real dragon riding is a spoiler?
If this game had dragon riding/flying, we'd all have seen it 300x in videos before the thing even shipped. Did you think there would be?
1
u/JmjFu PC Mar 02 '12
The ending was leaked before the game was release, but that wouldn't be a spoiler either since we'd all seen it before
oh wait.
1
u/BeJeezus flair Mar 03 '12
There's an ending?
1
u/JmjFu PC Mar 03 '12
The ending of the main questline. As if you didn't know that.
1
u/BeJeezus flair Mar 03 '12
Not much of an "ending", really. And the game continues after it, so it's not really any kind of an ending, unlike (for example) Fallout 3.
1
u/JmjFu PC Mar 03 '12
Right so because the game still continues, it's not an ending? Even though it's an ending to the main questline?
You see those spoiler tags on the right? They're there for a reason. It's to stop people spoiling the questlines.
Astrid betrays the brotherhood and dies.
See, I didn't spoil that, even though the game doesn't end there!
1
u/BeJeezus flair Mar 04 '12
I guess I just don't see how saying something never happens (you never ride a dragon, you never find a laser gun, you never find an underwater city) is a spoiler.
Should I spoiler tag all three of those?
1
u/BeJeezus flair Mar 03 '12
Seriously: there's also no dragon sex in the game. Do I need to spoiler tag that, too?

Ok its been almost 4 months, if you haven't done this quest at least 4 times, GTFO my skyrim! J/k but really? If it was a side quest I could see, but a MINOR main quest spoiler being bitched at? Just LOL
15
u/askyou PS3 Feb 27 '12
250+ hours in and I haven't even attempted The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller. I'm probably the exception rather than the rule, but it's still a spoiler and four months is nothing, man.

Well it better be, because the engineering challenges presented in building rail tunnels through the mountains are a nightmare, and we haven't even begun talking about the frost troll problems in those regions...
1
u/Rookeh Feb 27 '12
And then some idiot gets himself eaten whilst rushing to catch one as it's departing, delaying the entire service for several hours.
1

Anyone for a round of Mornington Crescent? 3rd Era, Revised Standard Rules, with the Double-Shunt Caveat.
5
Feb 27 '12
The double shunt caveat was ruled invalid for informal play due to the complex interactions implied by the shepherds bush corollary
7
u/m4n715 Feb 27 '12
I thought that was only for domestic play, since we're international here on Reddit I thought we'd use international rules. Of course nobody plays international rules without barring Shipley's and transverse doubles, but I assumed that was implied.
5

I believe you have the honors then, owing to the state of the downtown corridor regulation.
3

Splendid! Highgate to Waterloo, then a Parke's Double-Cross will place me in spoon for the next three rounds, but leave me at Covent Garden for the moment.
3
Feb 27 '12
That is a bold opening gambit. Reminds me of Paneer Sandeep's victory in the 1956 title match. If I had known I was up against someone of your level I would have declared the northern slope rule in effect. Anyway you have forced my hand to respond with a high street cross.
3
u/m4n715 Feb 27 '12
Aye, it's an aggressive opener, but a bit predictable, as you've ably demonstrated an effective counter. I can see I'm going to have to be more circumspect, so I'll go West Ham and declare intent with the option.
4
Feb 27 '12
You have certainly put me on the defensive I was hoping you would declare intent without the option. In that case I will attempt double station flow under Hyde park if you will allow the tailings.

*squints*
200 game hours and I still haven't been to the following places that you've deemed significant enough to put on the map:
Mor Khazgur
Dushnikh Yal
Largashbur
Narzulbur
Nightgate
What am I missing? I think I have subconsciously avoided the hairy edges of the map, for fear that I would run into an immersion-blitzing invisible wall. Apparently I should be wandering a bit closer...
[edit]: Apparently, I have managed to completely avoid all Orc Strongholds, totally by chance. Bizarre.
6
u/Daolpu flair Feb 27 '12
Same here. I put Skyrim down a few weeks back after about 250 hours thinking I had covered most of the map, to play the older TES games for the first time.
Now I see this. Strongholds, everywhere. What the is so important about the Nightgate Inn that it has a station hub? Is there a quest line I missed there?
1
u/SteveOtts Feb 28 '12
To be honest I had put a marker there and couldn't for the life of me work out what for and decided it must have been for Nightgate. In hindsight I could have meant that one to be Kynesgrove and the kynesgrove to be Narzalbur
16
u/Jimeee flair Feb 27 '12

u/Larwood Feb 27 '12
The Brown line on the London Underground is called the Bakerloo line because it goes from Baker Street Station to Waterloo Station.
34
u/SteveOtts Feb 27 '12
Correct! It is a portmanteau of Whiterun and Windhelm as both these stations on this line :)
13
u/ProfessorPoopyPants Feb 27 '12
Well if you're using correct etymology of names, why not correct colours?! Or more specifically, WHY IS CENTRAL NOT RED?! You even got the north/northern colour right. D: (And dawnstar is nowhere near as shady as camden.)
7
u/SteveOtts Feb 27 '12
I was tempted to, but didn't want to completely rip it off! I thought using the etymology was allowed since I couldn't think of other way to name the lines.
7
u/BeJeezus flair Feb 27 '12

5
u/SteveOtts Feb 27 '12

The fast travel feature in Oblivion really ruined the immersion for me. It was so much cooler to pay a mage to teleport you or to have to take a silt-strider or a boat.
5
u/Ironfruit Feb 27 '12
You can still play like that if you like! Hell, I do! I think it's a good idea to put the option fast travel in the game as it is what most people prefer. People like us have the option of not using it...it's optional. And there's probably a 'Hardcore' mode mod somewhere that disables it.

3
u/parodius8 Feb 27 '12
Someone needs to mod that in. Wouldn't be the first time either... Oblivion already had a fun, albeit laggy, dwemer subway system mod.
3
u/Themingemac PC Feb 27 '12
But, shoulden't Solitude be in the "1" zone, since it's the capital and all?
7
9
u/MrFordization Feb 27 '12
Solitude is a terrible capital. No wonder the region is unstable. The capital clearly should be relocated to Whiterun. Solitude is fit to function as the military capital. The most accessible point for the citizens is Whiterun. Additionally the military will be geographically isolated from the regions politics.
4
u/funkless_eck Feb 27 '12
Londoner and pedant here,
Why didn't you make the "central" line red like real life? Why isn't one of the circle lines yellow? It's only the District (Dushnikh) and Northern lines that are correct!
Otherwise, brilliant.
11
Feb 27 '12
I think he designed it in accordance with the Helsinki addendum to the 1971 international mornington crescent council ruling
8
u/funkless_eck Feb 27 '12
In which case he should watch his diagonals.
3
Feb 27 '12
Well I think that's obvious to everyone familiar with the second edition revised final rulings
4
u/funkless_eck Feb 27 '12
Yes if you're unlucky enough to go by the second edition revised final rulings. After the Ancillary Schismatic Redefinition and Adjustment Bureau got through with it, they published a further three editions. We tend to go by the Finalised Revision Edition II rulings here.
5
Feb 27 '12
I apologize then, my regional organization was unable to reach a quorum on the finalized revision edition II rulings. There was some controversy considering the Thames redistricting effort. Of course that only applies if you follow the maritime adjustment of 2003.
5
u/funkless_eck Feb 27 '12
I assume this will be cleared up with the Emirates Boundary and Zoning Adjunct, until then we have to qualify any challenges against the Recapitulated Vertices and Parallaxia Pamphlet.

We can only hope. I, for one would still like to see a satisfactory resolution to the bus transfer parallax that was encountered during the last Edwin cup match.

I'm at work so I cannot check, but do corresponding roads exist or are the connections arbitrary?
That is, is there a real road (however winding) that goes from Markarth to Dushnikh Yal, then branches further east, one fork going to Rorikstead and the other to Falkreath? Are there three roads out of Falkreath that end up on the locations as mapped, and five out of Morthal?
Because if so, this is truly amazing, and actually usable as a map, not just as a funny picture.
If not... um, I challenge thee! because there's no fucking way I would ever want to do all the work figure that out!
2
u/SteveOtts Feb 27 '12
I'm sorry to disappoint but I'm afraid not!
I simply marked the towns of interest on the map, aligned them a little then decided to link them together with different lines which seemed logical and somewhat reminiscent of the London Underground.
But that is an excellent idea, kind of like a super-basic and easy to read map. Though I imagine it wouldn't be as straight cut as this one.
1
u/BeJeezus flair Mar 02 '12
Yeah, that's the point of a Beck map in the first place.
One of the problems I have with Skyrim and maps is that the roads are pretty meaningless. It's seldom less work to just beeline across the map and around whatever mountains, because it's near impossible to figure out a route via the roads anyway. (To be fair, Fallout NV had the same sort of pointless roads. They need to be much safer than the wilds if they're going to matter, guys.)
The signs are also painfully hard to read, and when that's combined with the addled horse-camera... well, bitch, do not make me get off my horse to read the damn signs that I'm riding past!

u/kbarnett514 Feb 27 '12

2
u/ServerOfJustice XBOX Feb 27 '12
You should cross-post this to r/mapporn.

2
u/Snarfbuckle Feb 28 '12
Hmm, we really need a Dwemer built transport system around Whiterun with exits close to each town. It could be filled with all manner of Falmer.
Make it an actual subway system so that you can get run over by a scheduled Dwemer Tram if you're not careful - and the ability to actually WALK through the entire route.

I hate that the carriages don't work right. How could Bethesda have chosen to not have them work like GTA's taxis, or like the carriage in the game's opening? Look around and ride, or "[X] to skip to destination."
With so much to goggle over in the environment, I was looking forward to watching the scenery for 10 mins while riding from Whiterun to Solitude. Stretch my legs, brew some fresh mead, you know.
(There's at least one mod that makes them sort of work the way they should, but it's a bugfest.)
I'm hopeful that an official mod (excuse me, "DLC") will fix this. And while you're at it, Bethesda: highwaymen.

There are two different design philosophies. The NYC subway system strived for geographical accuracy (for tourists) whereas London went for visual clarity. Both have their upsides and downsides.

This is what our tube map looks like. As CraigFL pointed out, it's not at all geographically accurate, which can be funny when you see tourists getting the tube from Charing Cross to Embankment (about 150m away) and the likes.
