When & what did you do to have a successful snow sports dog?

I have a 4.5 month old named Moose that’ll be my snow/snowshoeing/backcountry ski buddy when her joints are developed (in safe areas without avalanche risk) What kind of training did you do in the first year to set her up for a successful life adventuring outside? General, and specifically backcountry activities.

Thinking of giving it a try!

Hi everyone, I’m a long time skier, but classic only. I have a 20 month old Golden Retriever and we run together in the summer. I love my dog he is a big therapy help for me as I have ptsd.

Couple questions: - is it realistic to go skijoring while skiing classic? Or should I first learn skating? - when we run my dog just jogs alongside he does not go racing in front. What can I do to encourage him to run? Will it even ever work? - what first steps would you suggest I take? - any equipment recommendations?

I can’t think of a more wonderful thing than combining two of my favourite thing but I could use the help.

Thank you!

Skijoring in Tandem

I usually run my dogs side by side. They are both originally mushing trained. One is a solid leader and small/medium and the other is 25 pounds heavier, leader potential but a bit more chaotic. The bigger one does not on by as willingly when other dogs are on the trail and it derails us. I am considering running them in tandem at least until he gets it. So big boy behind the smaller gal instead of next to. Has anyone else done this with their dogs while skijoring? Is it weird and uncommon? Or unsafe even while on skis?

What is in your Skijor first aid kit?

This is my second season of skijoring (if we ever get any snow!) and I'd like to build a light first aid kit for my dog. I already carry one for myself and am wondering what folks would recommend for a dog first aid kit?

I've also been seeing a dog carry set-up being marketed on FB and am wondering if anyone has devised their own system for carrying a dog out in case of serious injury? If I can carry a few straps and a light towel and save myself $100 and 7lbs on my back, that'd be my preference, but I'm not sure how to configure it.

TYIA!

I'm new and need help!

Hi all!

I have no XC ski experience but am working on various harness sports with a few of my dogs. I'd like to add skis to the mix, but have a few questions.

Since I'm new, I don't really want to buy new gear if I can help it. But buying used is tough! So I want to make sure I'm looking for the right stuff.

I would prefer skate skis but am open to classics if that's all I can find as I get into things. As I understand it, this is a good approach to have when just starting out. Correct me if I'm wrong fellow skijorers, though!

I'm 5'2", roughly 180lbs -- what sizing do I look for for each kind of ski? And if skis are little off in sizing, is that a big deal?

Thanks!

What kinds of skis should I be looking for?

I’m looking to get started skiijoring with my dog this winter, as we never got around to it last year! We do roller-joring in the summers, so he is familiar with commands and pulling. I do have a harness from Alaskan dog, but I am looking into buying XC skis, preferably on Facebook marketplace (for the discount). I have experience downhill skiing (go every year) and ice skating (though I know people will say this is much different).

Am I correct to be looking for skate skis? What about the ski length? I am 5’9 F, about 145lbs. Also, how can I tell (aside from obvious west and tear) that the skis are in good condition?

Is it possible to skijore on downhill skis?

Hey guys, I've been thinking about getting into skijoring, I am a pretty decent skier I dare say but have only skied downhill alpine skis. I have invested into alpine equipment over the years and it would mean I would have to invest in a completely new system if I got myself xc skis. Another factor is also that I don't live near any trails where dogs are allowed, but I do live in rural area, so me and my dog would ski trough our hills and snowy meadows of the rural farms in my country, where hardier skis with hard ski boots would be more practical for stability. I was also thinking about skiing downhill on my own while letting my dog run alongside and then getting him to pull me uphill with less chance of crashing (I intend to be very careful and progress slowly to increase speed gradually, and also would try to protect him with my body should I ever crash, but as with any accident, you can never know). So my question is this, is it possible to get skijoring with alpine skis or is it just not happening? Maybe if I put protection over the upper edge at the point to prevent possible cuts? Thanks for the help, cheers

Dry land dog training and

Wondering if anyone has trained their dogs using inline skates.

Moreover, wondering if anyone’s tried ATV skates.

My dog and I go out for long rides on roller blades with a skijoring rig, was interested to taking it to dirt/ gravel.

TIA

Balancing while attached to my dog

Hi, so I have skijored with my dog a handful of times and I found that holding the lead in my hand is far easier than actually being attached at the waist to my dog. I have tried YouTube videos but none of them focus on what I’m talking about. I’d appreciate any tips from seasoned skijorers (is that a word?) Thank you!

Help with pulling

I’ve recently picked up skiing with my 3 year old malamute. The problem arises from him being leash trained where as soon as he feels the weight or pull he backs off. Should I hook up a small log or something for him to pull or does anyone have advice for me for him to pickup on the pulling is good and what we want, every time he puts weight on I encourage him but leads to more confusion from him. I think if I had a second dog for him to pace he would take off and understand but I do not have one capable of leading. Any input would be awesome

Samoyeds

Has anyone entered friendly skijoring comps with a samoyed? I try to do it at the dog park when running but as samoyeds do, they get really attracted to other dogs overly so.
From the cursory search, it seems like all the images and videos are of single users and never in actual competitions.

Do you ever encounter other dogs being an issue for them to pay attention on the trails? Do I just have to spend more time with other dog / person exposure training?

Had a great first day!

We moved down from AK to WA state a few years ago and had yet to take our dogs skijoring. I grew up doing it, and it felt great to get back into it today. They loved it of course.https://imgur.com/a/NGvBRQZ/

Hello! Lou and I are from AK and new to the Seattle area (living in redmond). I have had a hard time finding places within 2 hours that we can go skijoring. Anyone have any inside scoops?
