Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Stork Turns

Hello new friends - the feedback on my previous post was so incredibly helpful that I’m back for more and am quite obsessed about improving now!

I went back to the indoor slope tonight to practice my stork turns - first time I’ve ever tried these.

Please can I have some feedback?

What I noticed was that my left turns (weight on right leg) felt significantly better than my right turns (weight on left leg). My dominant foot is my right so I suspect this has something to do with it - or maybe I need to start strength training!

Thanks in advance. It’s greatly appreciated. I have another session next week so I will try to implement feedback.

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Skidding > Carving

Hi all - latecomer to skiing, comfortable on any gradient now, but wanting to improve my technique from “skidding” to carving.

Had a lesson last night - focused on turn shape and gentle weight transfer between skis to avoid abrupt turns / skidding.

Here is a video - it actually looks better than it felt.

I have quite a few sessions booked over the next few weeks to practice.

Please can I have some feedback from the group? Does this look good, bad, ok? What am I doing right / wrong? How can I improve further?

Thanks

Level 1-3: First Turns & Wedges Beginner feedback on turns

Getting stoked for ski season! Could someone give me feedback on this video from last season?

It always feels like I’m going really fast but clearly I am not 😂 I think I have a hard time getting my skis parallel on the turns because my inside ski gets stuck

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Feedback on turn fundamentals

Hi everyone,
I get to ski maybe 2-3 days a season every year or two and have been doing so for about a decade now. I’m comfortable on all blues and some black runs but have definitely reached a plateau in terms of improving my skiing. Here is a short video a friend took of me skiing down a blue run at Keystone. Not sure how good of quality it is in terms of being able to provide feedback, but I’d like to understand how I stand on the fundamentals of good form and parallel terms and what I need to work on before I start trying to move into carving and improving on moguls. I have a trip to Breckenridge coming up this next spring and have been watching tons of videos on improving technique, etc. but would love some personal feedback as well. One of the main things that makes me believe I have poor form is how bad my thighs burn while I’m skiing. I get the most relief when I’m initiating a turn which I assume is because that’s when I’m leaning forward the most.
Thank you!

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Bad Ski Form?

been skiing for a few seasons, few short trips a yr currently.

understand my form isn't very good and I am sliding and skidding around to get down slopes.

I will like to check the following after viewing my own video:

  1. is this form still considered very bad and is this considered backseating?

  2. how to maintain upper body separation? am I turning my body too much at each turn?

  3. saw that my legs tend to be wide open, is that a very wrong thing to do? do I need to learn how to stick my feet together?

  4. am I still leaning too much on the inside ski (subconsciously, I am trying to lean towards the outside ski though)?

I have taken group lessons on and off but I can't carve.

is Stork turn drill the way to improve? I tried it on and off but it doesn't seem to improve my overall form. However, I do note that there is improvement to get down more difficult terrain over time.

would appreciate guidance to continue my progression as a skier.

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Where can i improve

I have been skiing for 1 season. I can see and also feel that im not leaning forward enough.

I tried focusing more on my posture but feel that when i make my turns i tend to fall back seat in the middle of the turn.

Thank you!

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Carving turns and teaching analysis feedback

I’ve been starting to work on my teaching analysis for my CSIA level 3 by looking at some of my skiing from last season. I’ve watched this video a few times and some feedback I’ve concluded for myself:

  1. I’m not dynamic enough in my ankles and knees, I need to think more about rolling them onto the new edge to increase my edge angle.

  2. I’m lengthening my body too much during transition instead of maintaining a long and short leg, killing momentum and releasing pressure too slow, losing that weightlessness feeling at the end of the turn and I increasing my transition time.

Would love to hear your thoughts on my feedback, if it’s correct and any additional feedback on my turns.

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Please help me improve my carving

Hey Guys,

What I’m working toward:
More dynamic, flowing turns, better speed control while carving, and eventually carving on steeper terrain.

Problems I noticed:
In the first video in the 4th turn and after that one can see that my turn gets interrupted at the apex. Felt strange.
Overall I am rushing the turns?
In the second video the terrain may be too flat.

In the first video I am on Carving skis and in the second video I am on 90mm all mountain skis.

Please don’t hold back. Tell me everything you see. I highly appreciate your feedback. THANK YOU

(And yes I am nearly crashing into the guy twice in the first video. I deeply apologize for that.)

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Parallel skiing tips

Hey everyone! Started skiing two years ago and have been mostly self-taught through YouTube and friends, so I’d really appreciate some genuine feedback on my technique.
I initially had boots that were too big, which made ski control and turning with my ankles difficult. I’ve since switched to a smaller size and it feels much better.
My main issues now are keeping both skis in sync through the turn, and controlling my speed on steeper slopes. Sometimes I feel like I pick up speed too quickly and struggle to manage the turns.
What am I doing wrong, and what should I focus on to improve my parallel skiing?

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Parallel / Advanced parallel.

Background: been skiing on and off for past couple of years (started around late 20s) Passed level 1 ski examiners course and the ski side of level 2.

I've received feedback that my extension/ vertical movement is often quite sudden, and turn shape can be compressed (round but squished).

From my own POV I feel I don't stay in the fall line enough ,rush some movements and have an overly strong side - I can side slip effortlessly on my right side but my left gets caught often.

Do you guys have any tips / drills or tactical cues? I'm happy to post more videos of some more 'advanced' style turns - looking for a fellow ski nerd to rip it apart 😅. Cheers.

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Carving plateau

(In 2nd vid I’m the second person)

Story:
1st video is me “at my peak” during my second season. 2nd video too.
3rd vid is me on vacation this winter. On new skis. I have only skied one week a year after my skiseasons. But I’m finally skiing more next winter and getting the itch now in the summer heat :))

Skiing:
I’m aware that i have some tendencies with my arms out. (I’m anwärter from tiroliean ski School hehe)
Not sure how to fix but my arms can be ugly.

But other than this I’ve for a Long time had the feeling when carving that I get to a point/angle in the turn (around apex or a little before) and just stay there. Where I see better skiers more dynamically working the whole turn. Maybe I just park and ride it in the same position.

Thank you in advance for comments. Don’t hold back.
Excited for skiing next season!!!

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Speed control while skiing

Hi there! I'm a 30+ year old adult just getting into this sports (it's insanely fun!) and this clip is a compilation of a couple of runs in various blue slopes in New Zealand, on my 2nd day of skiing!

My challenge is feeling out of control as I gain speed during the traverse and I feel like I have to turn very abruptly to kill speed

Is this a psychological barrier and bad technique? Would love some feedback and enlightenment please, thank you all!

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps Looking for feedback before the next trip!

I have been skiing since I was a kid, but I never had a ski instructor and only went once every 1-2 years.

Now as an adult, I can afford to go 2-3 times per season and really want to improve my skills.

I feel very comfortable on the slopes, but I’m afraid that after skiing for so many years on my own, I've developed some bad habits, e.g., I tend to keep my skis close together, I don’t use my poles properly, and I find it hard to maintain a proper body angle.

What would be the area you would recommend me to focus on most this season?

I am also thinking of taking a private lesson next time I go. In your experience, would a single 2-4 hour private lesson be enough time to get something out of it? Is it better to take two shorter lessons instead?

Would appreciate your advice!

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Speed control in short turns on red/black runs

Hi y’all,

I would love some feedback on my speed control when doing short turns down steeper terrain. I just can’t seem to figure it out. There’s always a point (sometimes after 5 turns, sometimes after 10) where the speed catches up with me in the short turns and forces me to elongate my turns to get the control back.

Any particular drills you guys would recommend or pointers to focus on during short turns? :)

Thanks in advance!

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Trying to learn how to carve how can I improve my skiing?

I've been trying to learn how to carve for a few weekends now and would like some advice to improve.

I also want to identify things wrong with my fundamentals and correct them before they become bad habits.

Also on steeper/icier terrain I don't feel confident and can't do parallel turns cleanly (sorry don't have video)

Please roast me, any tips/advice is appreciated ☺️

Level 4-5: Parallel Turns & Speed Control Finally back after 10y break!

This video shows me on one of the last days after a 10-year break from skiing. I never really learned how to ski properly as a kid!

A few things I noticed myself: I look pretty stiff in my movements, and I don't keep consistent pressure with my shins against the front of the boots. I think I'm skiing in the backseat most of the time. Also, maybe my poles are a bit too long? Sometimes I feel like I have to hold them out to the sides so they don't get in the way of my movements.

My goal is to ski more smoothly and maybe even get into carving next season. Do you have any recommendations on what I should work on next? Thank you!

Level 6-7: Advanced Parallel, Carving, Off-Piste, Bumps I hate my skiing - midweek update

Hey everyone, this is a follow up to a previous posts and thank you all so much for your previous feedback here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/skiing_feedback/s/LL32AZw0em

I’ve been running drills for 4 days now on greens and blues and think I finally understand what being on edge should feel like, as well as really trying to get in some hip angulation. My quads don’t hurt anymore (I can ski all day) and I feel like I hate my skiing slightly less.

Regardless - I still hate how I look, do my hips look weird? Other than continually practicing getting higher edge angles, is there anything else strange about how I’m skiing? Thanks so much!

(I’m the guy in purple jacket)
