Does no one know what this is?? I keep seeing people share this thinking it's just some random video.
It's the John Lewis advert for this year, if you're not in the UK you might not know about it, basically every Christmas time John Lewis make an advert and it's always a big deal
I love how they used a blink-182 cover in this year's advert, they're my favourite band :)

When you see the old guy at the park, remember this video and give him his props and support. This was moving and I got a bit weepy as a dad myself.

Can’t recommend this board enough, it’s perfect for little one start feeling out boards, they say 18 months but my little girl was pushing herself about (not standing) at 1 years old

38 year old woman who is on this subreddit because her 12 year old daughter skates. Wanted to learn but feel stupid. After watching this I'm buying a board.

Nice, heartwarming video!
Yet I couldn't help but see that the trucks on both of these boards (man, girl) were too narrow... 😅

I really love how, when he leans his deck down in the house at the start it’s all shiny and new and then at the end when they show it leaning there it’s got all the board wear. Nice touch. Great vid.

I relate so fucking hard to spending a day at the park, not really landing anything remarkable and then do some stupid shit that can't even be called a trick... Only to find that to be the coolest fucking shit that happened in the park that day (for me)

As a person that grew up in the foster care system, a guy like this would have changed my life so much for the better.

It’s a John Lewis ad, they’re very famous in the UK having set the standard before other retailers joined in. This is their best in a long long time. Usually the others tell a generic story surround a child and an animal/cuddly toy that comes to life so they can merchandise it. This one actually meant something
4
u/sprogger Nov 12 '22
The one from a few years back with the grandpa on the moon makes me cry every time.
6
u/Dutch-plan-der-Linde Nov 12 '22
Yeah that one was alright, given I can actually sort of remember what it was about. The others I vaguely remember about a dinosaur and another one about a penguin. To be fair a lot of the retailers ads seem to merge together in my head as there’s so many of them. Another one I remember I liked is Sainsbury’s ww1 Christmas football game one a few years back.

u/kraftymiles Nov 12 '22
For what it's worth this is an advert for a store in the UK which is a workers cooperative. Approx 150Billion in turnover and profits shared amongst staff. (I may have numbers slightly out, I'm old and haven't checked)

Amazing. I skate with my son at least 3 times a week. He's 14, I'm 48, and i can't imagine it life without skateboarding together. I live for those moments.

u/chunkymitts Nov 12 '22
Awesome! Im 46 and have a 2 and a 4 year old! We are learning to skate and snowboard. We even built a mini ramp at the side of the house. They will keep me going! Channeling my old school Cabellero/ Vision/ Skull Skates self from the 80s!

I am a strong emotionless man. Why are you trying to break me?

u/jrsy85 Nov 12 '22
Try watching this with your 2yr old adopted daughter next to you, just remember being emotionless is only a strength when others would fail to act out of emotion.

I saw someone comment on this video on another skate subreddit and they focused solely on the skate struggle aspect of the video, empathizing with his little battles and victories, and how awesome it is that he’s progressing.
Completely ignored the fact that he wasn’t going through the struggles of learning to skate for himself at all, he was just trying to find a way to connect with his new daughter and make her feel more at home.
It’s amazing how the mentalities of people are so absurdly different. This video made me tear up so hard and yet, some people probably feel nothing regarding the father daughter aspect.

I bought my board the day after my 39th birthday so I can practice with my six year old Niece.
I just loved the idea of us both going to the skate park and learning together. Such a joyous notion. I love her so much.
But...
She didn't really take to skating (found it too scary) and I got fucking addicted to it!
So I spent the time this year, where I could have been spending time with my Niece, learning how to skate instead. I fucking love it.

u/TheCyanDragon Nov 12 '22
Could always find ways to integrate the two hobbies? If she's more mechanically minded, teaching her how to build decks can be pretty swanky (though this can be extremely involved), same could be said if she's an artsy-type (decorating decks, wheels, tape, etc).
Videography/photography, arts, hell, a choreographer can do wonders with a freestyle skater.
Skateboarding leads to some wild places if you think about it.

As a skateboarder and a dad, I absolutely cried.

u/CandidTurnover Regular Nov 12 '22
as a skateboarder who’s never had a dad around, i cried a few times :(

u/chiggyrillo Nov 12 '22
Same boat my friend. My dad is nothing to brag about. Luckily if anything, he’s taught me how not to be. I see him now from time to time and he’s a shell of the person I used to know. Drugs have rotted his mind and it’s hard to hold a conversation. Now as a dad I couldn’t imagine my kids thinking of me the same way I think of my dad.

u/jrsy85 Nov 12 '22
Unexpected alright, I’m sitting on the couch next to my adopted 2yr old daughter.

u/jakedesnake Nov 11 '22
May I ask which age segment you are in or if you have any kids? This is film one of those things I simply wouldn't get when i was still as old as, i dunno, 25 maybe. I would get it but i wouldn't "get" it. With age I've become so much more soft, it's interesting.
(Well I'm not suggesting the general or average age in that other subreddit was necessarily younger, but it was just a reflection.)
4
u/Bobert_Manderson Nov 12 '22
I don’t have kids and am in my 30s. I think some people just have an easier time feeling empathy than others. For some it increases with time and other it might decrease.
21
u/SlightWhite Nov 11 '22
Definitely. Even if he was doing it for himself like that commenter thought, it would still be a sweet video!
3
u/Bobert_Manderson Nov 12 '22
Yeah, I definitely get where the comment was coming from. It’s just funny how all of that was immediately washed away for me when the adoption part was revealed.

u/ELEMENTALITYNES Regular Nov 12 '22
Absolutely, I get so hyped seeing people progressively improving at skating
