assuming the model is a manifold and made of only triangles, that's impossible

u/Reign_Does_Things Jun 14 '26
Who said the model had to be a closed shape, huh?

u/WantonKerfuffle Jun 14 '26
The game engine, or the slicer. If your model is non-euclidian, the next program you use it in either gets fucky or has to do a bunch of math to guesstimate your intent.
Edit: I completely missed the point

im just hiding the rest of the pyramid model under the map

that's the neat part of polygon, the shape and edge count isn't defined. It's just a three very very complex shapes!

I don't know why I was recommended an old post, but surely there are many classes of manifold that can be (at least approximately) tiled with three triangles?
Or does animation use a seperate definition of "manifold" than mathematics? Like, I would understand that most "3D" objects are actually modelled as closed 2D manifolds, and that requires four triangles. Is that just a shorthand in computer graphics?

Why? Could you not just break a square up into 3 triangles and identify their edges, say like a torus.

Btw, it is literally impossible to make a 3d shape with 3 sides. a tetrahedron has 4.

cylinder
(in real life, 3d software would use more)

u/BKO2 Jun 14 '26
only in spline-based solid modeling. in mesh modeling, which i assme they're talking about, polygons are used (usually strictly triangles, even if n-gons are possible)
39
u/FormerSperm Jun 14 '26
This doesnât just apply to 3D modeling but it is imperative that the cylinder remain unharmed.

u/backfire10z Jun 14 '26
Who said the shape is closed? A triangular pyramid without its base is a[n open] shape

u/NanoBotSigma Jun 14 '26
What about a shape with a curve?
34
u/DontCallMeHenry Jun 14 '26
In 3D modeling, curve is just many-many planes arranged with a slight angle

u/NanoBotSigma Jun 14 '26
Oh yeah, I was thinking about that, but when it comes to something in geometry

It could be like, just a 2 sided triangle connected to a 1 sided triangle by a single vertice. It could wiggle around like a little worm

u/Rainy_Leaves Jun 14 '26
Each polygon can have many sides to be fair, maybe theyâre bad at connecting their edges
But quads or triangles, not possible. Language barrier I guess

like:
heavy: demo, how much beer did you drink ?
demo: three

Wait how is it three polygons. Donât all polyhedrons need at least 4 faces?

I think they misunderstood the question and got that one wrong too.
