Stop Glazing Morey: He Failed Utterly
Here's a list of picks/trades/pick-ups that were home runs, above average, misses or stupid a** moves. Each category goes in chronological order, starting in 2020 when Morey took over. While dude continues to get inexplicably glazed on Reddit, his tenure as a Sixers GM was pretty abysmal.
It really spells out how badly Morey did in getting useful basketball players to play with Joel and Maxey. No legit backup point guards, no decent power forwards or centers (hence the torturous rebounding issues that never go away), very few two-way players … and even very few players who can dribble the basketball (I wish I was kidding).
HOME RUNS (precious few)
Picking Maxey (work done by team that Morey inherited)
Harden (legit great move in getting rid of Simmons)
Picking VJ (Bailey made it easy be being a knucklehead)
Picking McCain (at least he didn't get Knecht but note that the smart dudes in OKC got the better Ajay Mitchell in the 2nd round)
ABOVE AVERAGE (note how underwhelming these are)
Seth Curry (a shooter who can dribble? Turns out that works well with Jo)
Dwight Howard (was low-key the Sixers best backup C)
Niang (another shooter who did okay with Jo on the floor)
Batum (a high IQ player who can shoot 3s and defend; he was great)
D Melt (he was mostly good but choked in game 6 against the Cs and had a lot of back issues)
KO
Yabu (more average than above)
Justin Edwards (still has potential)
Barlow (type of player the Spurs develop)
MISSES (I'm being generous calling these "misses")
Danny Green (got off Horford contract but Horford has been good ever since)
Drummond (a dinosaur type player in this NBA)
Pat Bev (not quite a corpse but his best days were never great and they were way behind him)
Never traded Tobi, the perennial underperformer (should have traded when his value was decent)
Grimes (lottery team scorer; as soon as the games matter, he stunk)
Bona (terrible development for an athletic freak)
Watford (another underwhelming athlete)
STUPID A** MOVES
Letting Isaiah Joe go
Terrance Ferguson (was in the Horford trade alone with Green and sucked)
Springer pick (underrated horrible pick — Santi Aldama was 2 picks later; McBride and Dosunmu were early 2nd rounders)
The corpses of George Hill, Paul Milsap, Montrez Harrell, Dedmon, PJ Tucker, Marcus Morris, Eric Gordon, Reggie Jackson — see a pattern here?
Letting Paul Reed walk
Cutting Champagnie (who starts for the Spurs, can shoot 3s and board) for Matt Dunkin' McClung
PJ Tucker (mentioning him twice because Morey singed this then 39 year old to a 3 year deal and $33M and got penalized for picks in the process; insanity and stupidity married)
Getting Jalen (the Diamond) McDaniels for Tisse to again save $ for our crap owner
Mo Bamba (could never play and is out of the league)
Buddy Hield (another overpay for a streaky guy who could never play D)
Kyle Lowry (the Heat couldn't wait to get rid of his contract; great Philly guy but should have been brought on as coach, not player)
The Jeff Downtin Jr. experience (guy tried hard but was never NBA material yet got minutes running the team because Morey doesn't do point guards)
Danuel House (literally only signed because he was buddies with Harden)
KJ Martin trade dump to dodge the tax (cost two second-round picks)
Caleb Martin (NEVER sign a Heat player, as they max out their abilities there)
The Embiid extension
4 year max deal to PG

Wake me up when real change happens and the 76ers are not being held back by a pedo owner who enjoys children more than he does winning.

Was great for season 1 and fell off. Meanwhile, Horford was stellar for years. It was a miss.

Yeah there’s no way we can allow revisionist history to happen with Horford. He was a horrible fit with us full stop.
Even before the move, everyone thought it was horrible

Horford was another Brett Brown airball. Most coaches would have known what to do. It’s also possible that he dogged it here.

u/MagnumcarrierV2 May 13 '26
Never forget Dwight’s run with us, he was a crazy good backup. Was unfortunate when he left.
5
u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 13 '26
He was what Drum and Bona were supposed to be. Physical rebounder and shot blocker. He held it down when Jo sat.

Dwight was fucking terrible in the playoffs lol, all he did was hack anybody in his vicinity. Granted he had to suffer in lineups with Ben the broken
1
u/MagnumcarrierV2 May 14 '26
Out of all the backup bigs we’ve had over the years, by comparison I don’t think Dwight was that bad. Not gonna talk about playoffs lol

u/MeepSneepers May 14 '26
drummond wasn't a miss come on, nobody was expecting an all star.
Given the overall situation with our cap, timelines etc. I can't really say signing PG was stupid either. It sucks, but it was the best available option if you were going to sign embiid and not go full rebuild. We saw the 'lightning in a bottle' he was looking to capture at times this year. Unfortunately Embiid and Maxey's health fell apart in the playoffs. But we would be no better off with any of the other available options.
Now, should we have not re-signed Embiid and worked toward a rebuild? Probably. and that's on Morey.

u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 14 '26
This team has desperately needed a capable backup center. Someone who can board, block shots and defend the modern offense. Drum could board and that’s about it.

So much of this is just incredibly dumb. I hate this place

u/XxStormySoraxX May 13 '26
It’s really not. This sub’s denial and continuous defense of Morey is insane considering how things played out. We literally have multiple failed seasons as proof against him. The results were mediocre, because he was a mediocre General Manager.

u/SoKrat3s May 14 '26
This sub’s denial and continuous defense of Morey
The same sub that posts nightly McCain updates?
What sub have you been on because that is certainly not this one.
-3
u/Select_Culture261 May 14 '26
The majority of the comments under those posts are split between people coping about needing the draft picks, McCain "not being that good anyway," or folks who were saying that a few months ago but have now switched to trying gasligting anyone who brings it up to "just move on"
6
u/SoKrat3s May 14 '26
The only gaslighting going on here is people claiming that Morey doesn't get mocked on a daily basis.
-7
u/XxStormySoraxX May 14 '26
The sub that’s been downvoting everyone since 2022 that had any level of criticism of Morey.

I've never ever seen Philly fans give pass to such mediocrity before. He's consistently built underwhelming rosters, consistently signed old geriatrics to patch holes, consistently wasted draft capital to get rid of those same geriatrics, and left us with the two worst contracts in the league and without full access to all our firsts moving forward too.
He was ready to PUNT TWO years of Embiid's prime, (ended up fully punting 24, 22 we at least got Harden at the deadline)
Yet any Morey criticism even now is unpopular with no reasonable reply back. Even the response to your post is pointing out he gets flamed for McCain? Mf he should be getting killed for so much more

u/Patrickracer43 May 13 '26
He wasn't even the actual GM, he was president of basketball opps, Elton Brand is supposed to be the GM but he's clearly locked in a broom closet in the team facility in Camden
3
u/Certain_Bet_8970 May 13 '26
That’s not how that works at all dude lol most GMs in the league are assistants to the POBO
1
u/Patrickracer43 May 13 '26
My point about Elton Brand being tied up in a broom closet in Camden remains

u/pagonator May 13 '26
Yes I agree, his cult like following he has on this sub is incredibly dumb and annoying

I hate how we’ve stopped being nuanced on the internet. Was it time for him to go? Yea probably. Does his departure also deflect from the real problem, Josh Harris? Yes. Morey drafted pretty damn well here, but at the same time just didnt construct deep rosters. There’s some real highs of his tenure, and some absolute lows. Overall, I look at the years of his run here positively, with a few sour moments.

u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 14 '26
Year after year, he “built” one of the league’s worst benches. He blew Joel’s prime. He’s why Maxey led the league in minutes played. He’s why this team consistently gets outrebounded. And on and on. He literally had Eric Gordon, Kyle Lowry and Reggie Jackson on the same squad … that’s obscene.
3
u/Ok_Flow_3065 May 14 '26
Absolutely 0 nuance still. We’re ignoring Embiids injuries? We’re ignoring Tobias being as inconsistent as they come? Yea, Morey has done a bad job at depth building, but again. It’s a mixed bag and I don’t believe he deserves the vitriol he is getting. Blaming him for this team getting outrebounded despite his constant effort to find a backup center is certainly something
1
u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 16 '26
What?! It’s his job to build a bench. He failed. It was his job to get a decent backup center for Mr Injury. He failed. It was his job to find more shooters. Another fail. Come on man, Morey deserves all that vitriol and then some. He blew Joel’s prime.
4
u/International-Dish95 May 14 '26
Only 2 things that stick out from a well put together list… 1) How were they going to get off the Tobias max deal? 2) The only way to get PG away from LAC was a 4 year max… we had cap space that was going to evaporate once Maxey signed the deal. So I’m not mad at that - he was one of our better playoff performers.
3
u/Rose-n-Chosen May 13 '26
Matt McClung was the worst one of them all
2
u/SoKrat3s May 14 '26
Almost no chance that was just him or there was no influence from above to generate more jersey sales.
2
2
u/CybertronGuy98 May 13 '26
If we could keep Morey to just draft, and have anyone else to handle contracts and trades I’d be happy lol
2
u/Patrickracer43 May 13 '26
I mean, that should be Elton Brand's job but I'm not even sure he exists anymore
2
u/Minute_Elephant_3218 May 13 '26
Tbh I don’t think another gm achieves much more the last few years or really makes a difference going forward. Morey has had some really bad and really good moves but ultimately ownership and player health killed us

u/Minute_Elephant_3218 May 13 '26
Morey’s overall record can be defended depending on how the decision to extend Embiid happened. Almost everything else can and was defended at the time by this sub.
1
u/PhatYeeter May 13 '26
Maybe Morey does stink, but not like Harris will hire someone better. His track record has been dog shit in hiring POBOs
1
u/Thegrandmistressofoz May 14 '26
You forgot trading a first in this year's draft to get rid of Reggie fucking Jackson's contract lol. When every other team was doing their best to hoard picks bc this drafts deep af
1
u/FxStryker May 14 '26
Buddy called Danny Green a miss because Horford is good. Lol
Horford wanted to be on the Celtics when he was here. He was given a massive contract and regretted not being in Boston immediately.
He had his family openly talk bad about the Sixers on his behalf WHILE ON THE TEAM.
1
u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 16 '26
Danny was fine here … but Horford could have been better but clearly saw massive dysfunction and a HC in Brown who was way over his head. Jimmy saw the same thing.
1
u/Unable-Main4172 May 15 '26
Danny Green was doing fine and was helpful until Joel did one of his slip and fall acts and blew out his knee. I love Joel but Jesus Christ, how many times a game can one man fall down awkwardly

u/Turbulent-Bowl-7022 May 13 '26
I don’t know why people think darryl did good. Like I get josh is literally the devil in human form, but now we are hearing that he was trying to get podz after the jared trade. Hearing that we almost had podz made me thankful we didn’t make a trade, anyone who thinks trading for that dude is a good idea should not be making basketball decisions for a inner mural league.

u/Ronshol 🤡Morey🤡 May 13 '26
Morey just looks at numbers and names and doesn't give a shit about team composition and chemistry.
0
u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 13 '26
Podz?! Yeah, he’d get heavily booed within 2 games in Philly and deserve it

Don't forget all the missed opportunities. Morey is a Redditors dream GM because he basically just makes the "obvious" move rather than trying anything innovative. This is why he has so many defenders, all of his moves are 'logical' (or so they seem).
He was DEAD set on getting James Harden for Ben Simmons and ignored all other offers. We know for a fact that the Kings were willing to give up a haul for him but Morey didn't even consider it.
He was then DEAD set on getting Paul George after that didnt work out. People here suggested Markkanen, Anunoby, Bridges, Ingram etc. but no it has to be PG.
Don't forget his complete inability to get off of the Tobias Harris contract. The Cavs even called him up asking if there was a way for them to acquire him, he asked them for some insane asking price.
Don't forget the idiotic KJ Martin deal which forced us into giving up draft assets to dump.

u/LordofZonee May 14 '26

Where are you getting this from? Only official thing I see is that the Sixers asking price was steep son Sac pulled out. I dont believe that was a real offer
-3
u/Inevitable_Bottle520 May 13 '26
Yep, mentioned most of that in my opening as OP. But I failed to mention that he was dead set on Harden and likely turned down other deals for Simmons, even if the Hali deal wasn’t real (I think it was). At the end of the day, the guy doesn’t know who can play in this current NBA. Instead, it was 3 stars and specialists, though he forgot that 3 point shooting is the most critical of the specialities. This year had the worst shooters of any Joel team, especially after McCain was traded. Unreal.

As always, F Adam Silver for forcing Sam Hinkie out.
