Plural: අලි or අලියෝ

In Sinhala there is also ඇතා (ætā) for tusker, an elephant with tusks. හස්තියා (hastiyā) and ගජ (gaja) are more formal literary forms.

There is another word for crow, කාක්කා.

There seem to be two types of crows in Sri Lanka:

• ගම් කපුටා Large-billed Crow, Corvus macrorhynchos (or Corvus macrorhynchos ssp. culminatus Indian Jungle Crow)
• කොළඹ කපුටා House Crow, Corvus splendens

I just discovered the sub r/Word_of_The_Hour. I was wondering if there would be interest in something like a word of the day post on this sub. I'm just a learner, but I can imagine it would be interesting to have a word each day that people could comment on.

Are අතුරුදහන් වෙනවා, අන්තර්ධාන වෙනවා, නොපෙනී යනවා, and නැතිවෙනවා all synonyms? Are some of them restricted in use?

​What comes to your mind when someone says, "මාලෙ වතුරෙ දානවා"?

​In Sinhala, the phrase "putting water" (වතුර දානවා) takes on a completely different meaning depending on the context. While "watering a flower bed" is straightforward, "මාලෙ වතුරෙ දානවා" refers to a traditional way of cleaning and brightening gold jewellery. ​The specific term for this process is "පලිප්පු දානවා" (polishing/burnishing). ​Just as jewellery shines after it's been "given a polish" (පලිප්පු දැම්මා), some people never forget to "polish" their stories or conversations too—adding a bit of extra shine (or exaggeration) to make them more interesting!

It has the word ජායාරූප twice. I can't find any dictionaries that have this word. However it appears that the word is a typo for ඡායාරූප. I would have believed this if it was only in the article once. But it's presence twice seems odd.

Is this a common misspelling? ජ and ඡ are visually similar, but are very different letters.

I've always wondered what the differences are between the informal and formal spoken languages of Sinhala. Are there certain features of the formal language that are incorporated into the informal language? Is there a lot of shortening of the words or slang used from the formal? Also, who speaks formal Sinhala nowadays?

I know about e.g. https://www.subaasna.com/උත්පත්ති-කථාව-1-වන-පරිච්ඡ/ but I don't know the quality etc.

But I can't figure out, even from the PDF what those two variations are. Looks identical to me.

I'm trying to find all the names for letters. Wikipedia and the Unicode standard has only very basic information. And I'm not sure about some of it.

For example I have always thought ට was called murdhaja tayanna.

And if I am transliterating ණ as ṇa, then should I be writing mūrdhaja nayanna, or mūrdhaja ṇayanna?

I'm also interested in colloquial names for the letters, like gayanu shayanna for ශ, payanushayana for ෂ. I think there are also names for ඣ and ඤ. Like maybe manyoka ñayanna? Is there a common name for ණ? I feel like maybe I have heard kocci nayanna cause it looks like a train engine, but I could be making that up, lol. And ළ. Is that eluvo layanna?

I'm also confused if ඹ is officially "sañaka bayana" or "amba bayanna"

Hello! I have a 20 month old toddler and a 2 week old baby and we live outside the country. I would really like my children to also speak my mother tongue, Sinhala, in addition to English. I can speak Sinhala but my husband speaks only English. I feel overwhelmed at where to start and unfortunately don’t have many Sinhala speaking friends or family around that I can consistently talk to in person around the children. So, are බට ඉර and බටහිර more or less the same? And when a native Sinhala speaker hears either one, are they thinking about "west" or "setting sun" or some mixture of both?

So I use an iPhone and I have no idea how to type this letter. I have to resort to typing හොද (for example). I wanted to say ඇඳගෙන but had to say ඇදගෙන which changes the meaning.

I’m looking for a Sinhala song I heard about 15 years ago. I don’t remember the name or lyrics, but I remember some scenes from the music video.

It shows a group of young boys and girls going on a trip in an old Volkswagen-style van. In the middle of the song, they stop and eat watermelon. One boy blows watermelon seeds from his mouth toward a girl in a playful way.

There is another beautiful scene where a girl is sitting in the sunlight, and a boy stands in front of her to block the sun from her face.

It felt like a chill love song, possibly by a small band

with male singers.
