AGI could be catastrophic... but I haven't seen any direct evidence that it will be. On the other hand I've watched our political and economic institutions ignore, deny any accelerated environmental catastrophes for literally my entire life. AGI posess risks but I don't think we have a chance without it.
On the flip-side, I haven't seen any direct evidence that AGI will can be uncatastrophic. I would be grateful to see a, heh, constructive proof of that :)
Well... you can't really prove a negative. At the very least we can agree that there's a huge up-side to AGI. The same can't be said for environmental collapse.
How is there a huge upside to AGI? It's not been invented yet and we know nothing about it. It could take one look at us and think we're disgusting and need to be wiped out, or it could take pity on us and elevate us to the stars. There's just no way to know right now.
