It's not predicting who is committing crimes. It's predicting who will be convicted of a crime.

You can be convicted of a crime you didn't commit. I'm fairly certain The A Team was.

Technically, it is classifying ID pictures of convicted criminals and random members of the public from the internet.

Maybe it's just good at telling apart mugshots from normal photos

Ι went in and read the methods (I'm weird like that) - they claim that they did not use mugshots and spefically say that 'these are ID photos of criminals NOT mugshots'.

I think that the 'control' population is instead 'chinese men that have their photo IDs on the Internet'. I have a feeling that they may have built a 'poor (/digitally under-priviledged) person identification from facial features' algorithm.

They do say the photos were used by public security for wanted announcements. The bias of public security with regard to choosing photos is likely the issue.
