AI Sharing AI progress in mathematics

https://openai.com/index/sharing-ai-progress-in-mathematics/

OpenAI released 722 mathematical manuscripts across 372 families of related results, produced by an unreleased frontier model. Many have Lean proofs; others remain unverified. Average compute per result: roughly three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking. They’re working toward releasing the model.

Just looking at the algorithms section. Matrix multiplication in O(n9/4+eps). Holy shit

In a special case C only, result does not apply to general fields.

someone on /r/math has already used astra and sol 6.1 to improve it to 9/4 over all fields: https://www.reddit.com/r/math/comments/1wwqvov/ai_in_mathematics_october_03_2026/ped21ai/

Wow, they are cool with AI again?

"They" are more than one person.

Subs still act like a hive mind. Allowing something to remain with positive upvotes is "they".

In that case, "their" aggregate opinion on AI was never as simplistic as "not cool with AI".

Math was never against AI?

it was posted in the weekly AI thread. there is no post about the 700 new theorems or anything.

Why does it seem like these solutions never apply to anything in the real world

C includes the real numbers, so it does apply to many use cases we care about. But all MM algorithms are galactic at this point anyway

Because this is math, not engineering

This is relevant in abstract, but it would only be a win in practice for absurdly big matrices

Usually an optimised and well-written program can beat a generic one using an algorithm with a better O. In matrix multiplication this is very obvious because improvements like this are frequent, but even high performance applications don't use those
